I have been a member at only two forums some of you might remember RantsRaves at least that's what I remember it being called. I could be wrong about the name, it was short lived. It was run by an angry rat bastard who had racist tendancies, or so it seemed. Nearly everyone there left to found a new forum: the caged rage we were a ragtag bunch of miscreants. Different personalities, perpsectives, etc
after a time it also folded

at both places I found that I spent waayy too much time on line.

I HAD to post. I had to respond to this or that.

Thing is that it seemed that I would look up at the clock and see that I had 45 minutes to play only to look again and see that I was 3 minutes down and still in the middle of a racous debate. I lost a lot of time at my previous forums.

    You Too?

I've made, owned, administered, and deleted two online forums that were moderately popular for their infancy (each being under a year old) in 2005 and 2006. No, I won't disclose their names but I do miss them. Back when I was a member of a different forum that I didn't own, in 2004-2005, I would spend 8-10 hours a day on it, no joke. Sad, but luckily that was seven years ago when I was 14, and my stretch marks have since significantly healed.

    Ourcrazymodern? still, wondering

issmmm, maybe focus? I hope you'll find The Tilted Forum Project @ least a little different. Halx wanted evolution. Don't you? DO NOT respond to everything, only to those things you believe you can contribute to & you might find it a LOT more satisfying. Go on, try.

I spent 7 hours in chat last week. In one night. Obviously, I've got time to burn :)

There's absolutely nothing wrong with spending 7 hours in chat. I need to do that more often. I blame my new desk set up being much less 2 computer friendly than my old one.

You have, in a nutshell, explained why I've stuck around here for something like 8 years and devoted lots of spare time to this site, including flying places to meet with other admins.

But RantRaves was a shitshow. I never posted, but it was obvious it wouldn't last.

  7. TFP popped my forum cherry. I was never really an "internet person." I couldn't surf for hours or chat online or play online games like some people can. I liked the sunshine and IRL people too much. I would check the news, sports, email, facebook/myspace/livejournal and be done. Then I started to need some filler at work so I asked Cinn about that "forum thingy" she talked about. Mainly I just wanted to stalk that "internet boy" she fell for. He's ok I guess. Doesn't seem to have serial killer tendencies and she loves him or something.

So here I am. I used to just post on Pointed Announcements and lurk, but now I am trying to do more. I'll probably get bored or distracted by something shiny.

I've belonged to a few other forums that have dried up and died over the years. Never was much of a post whore.

I dunno. I guess I just cannot imagine having 7 hours to 'chat.' (I realize this was not the issue in the OP.)
It's funny you should mention 'the initiation' here, issmmm (note: I've only been aboard this version for 6-7 weeks).
I was a bit surprised at how 'direct' some people can be but I think there are lines that the TFP tries both to keep in place and not to cross.
    They can be fine lines.
I suppose to address your time use concerns I would ask what else is going on in your life that you need to tend to? When you set your forum time limit what is it you need to do next?
If you overstay here are you sacrificing sleep? Your SO? Work? School? Working out? Cleaning?
Generally, if I am 'trying to find something to do' here it's because I'm avoiding work and since my paid work is online, I'm only screwing myself.
I try to keep this place as a reward--get whatever I need done--or at least to a stopping point and then pop over.

I'm new at this to say the least; the range of subject matter is awesome here. So I'm mostly reading and understanding what the site is all about. Posting when I have something to say.

Nothing is being sacrafice Fangirl. Well nothing , really.
My OP was tounge in cheek. It was about those times when you check in to see what's doing on the board and you fiind yourself reading/watching/writing in some compelling debate. Those moments of additiveness.

    Missed the tongue-in-cheekiness!

lol...I feel the need to clarify that the "7 hours in chat" day was while I was only working 20 hours a week max, at a job I abhorred. New job now, and working lots of doubles, which means internet time has been significantly reduced.

I have learned to NOT check tfp in the morning when I wake up, lest I get caught up in reading and/or replying to posts while I'm supposed to be showering & such.

I joined my first forum in 2002, when I was 13. It was GroupHug, a place that bobGandalf can relate to very well.

It remained the only forum I would really stick to and frequent regularly until 4 months ago. The past couple years have been a very slow death of the forum, shrinking from 1000-2000 people to less than 10 who would post very irregularly.

So I searched for a new online home, and it seems I found it very quickly in the TFP.

Maybe I like these kinds of places so much because since the age of 13 I haven't really considered the places I've lived in as real "homes" (the way the average person would feel about it). Maybe it's my German-ness, but I'm pretty detached from my family and the entire "comfy home" concept.

Too tired to expand on this, will pick it up later.

I find your thoughts on how your forum usage might relate to upbringing/family interrelations.

Never really thought about why fell into forums. I think part of it is free expression, to be myself, without the confines of being PQ.

    Thanks for the tag Remixer.
