"I don't appreciate that kind of humor!"

Does the mere mention of something related to minorities now qualify as racist?
Yesterday, at a party, I passed along this joke:
Q: How does a Jew make tea?
    A: Hebrews it!

One of Sig's acquaintances from the University gave me this withering look and said "I don't appreciate that kind of humor." She then turned on her heel and stalked off.

I simply don't understand how this simple wordplay could offend anyone. Am I wrong?

I enjoy that type of humor, but I'm not the best person to ask. (white boy and an East Texan)

I wouldn't classify myself as racist, but I do like a good joke, so I probably am, at least a little bit.

Probably a good idea to not bring out the potentially controversial jokes in mixed company.

I don't see how it's racist or even insensitive unless the listener has a problem with puns. Sounds like someone who is incredibly thin-skinned to me. I have a hard time contemplating how that it even remotely controversial - once you get past the fact that it's an awful pun. It's not derogatory in any way, and my guess is that the listener in this case just heard the word "Hebrew" and reacted like a moron.

I was a little sensitive about using the N-word in public.

But then I saw Django and now it's okay.

I don't think the joke in question is anti-Semitic, and I'm a rabbi, for what it's worth. Then again, I also have a sense of humor and a comparatively thick skin, so I expect you should take what I said with a grain of salt.

I suppose it's not altogether impossible for me to envision a situation in which the above joke was told in a particularly sniggering way by someone who was a known anti-Semite or in an anti-Semitically charged environment, that could make me see the joke a little more sensitively. But really, unless you're essentially telling it while wearing a swastika, it seems awfully hard to make a case for the joke being offensive.

To be fair, I personally don't tend to find cheap one-line puns like this particularly amusing. But there's an awfully long distance between "I don't think that was all that funny," and "You should be ashamed of yourself, you bigoted, anti-Semitic son of a bitch." It sounds to me like your University acquaintance is just another academic who's used the glue of political correctness to help weld their buttcrack clenched closed. I've spent too much time around uptight academics to really take them very seriously anymore.

In any case, next time why not pass along: "Have you heard about that new all-kosher dairy store? It's called Jews For Cheeses." Better pun, IMO. If it gets labelled as anti-Semitic, tell them that the rabbi who told you the joke says that they need to get a life.

Never understood people's need to feel politically correct. I make and hear jokes about all races all the time.

Having lived in some of the most anti-semitic countries in the world the past 5 years, and in very-politically-incorrect Australia the 5 years prior to that, hasn't helped.

eh, it depends on the audience and intent.

Look what Mel Brooks got away with... (Hitler in Springtime...to fulfill Godwin's Law on this topic.)

Some are going to be offended no matter what you do, depending on their mood.
Just judge your audience and know in your heart.

Good racial humor plays upon the expectations of the listener and alleviates the rightfully uncomfortable tension by making him/her the true subject of the joke. It works precisely because it swaps horror for humor, is more clever than it is mean and it leaves the listener laughing too hard to be offended.

Lindy, one need not to be thin-skinned to be offended by your joke provided they have two working ears and a bit of common sense. You knew what you were doing in mixed company, toying with a taboo subject, it's comedic value contingent upon the potential to offend. Failing to deliver any sort of comedic relief for what is essentially an unnecessarily uncomfortable situation you created for all those involved is such a dick move. You must have been the life of the party. Were I the host, you sure as hell wouldn't be invited to the next shindig.

As for the subtext here, I don't think it extreme to say that no one can fairly determine what others have a right to be offended by. Least of all are you privileged white male heteronorms. Seriously, suck a dick (it'll do wonders for your perspective.)

You obviously haven't been keeping track of the joke that is our legislative branch.

I mean, toe taps in airport bathrooms? Anybody? That's pure comedic gold.

That is exactly what my joke did. It played upon the listeners' expectation and "rightfully uncomfortable tension" that the punch line would be something anti-semetic. The punch line was, as you say, "more clever than it was mean." It was nothing more than a simple play on the word Hebrews. "He brews tea." Get it? Having a Jew as the protagonist was not gratuitous, it was essential to the humor.
Q: How does an African-American make tea?
A: He brews it. Funny, huh?

You are, in my humble opinion, incredibly full of shit.:) All except one thought it funny and laughed, along with a couple of the usual groans elicited by bad puns.

    Oh, we have a subtext?
    Yes we do.
The subtext of your concluding sentences is that you know absolutely nothing about me, but you take your potshot anyway.
What makes you think that I am a "privileged white male heteronorm?" Or, is that just a stupid assumption on your part? Have you read any of my posts in the TFP?
    Sheesh!
Seriously, (as you say) if sucking dick gives perspective, mine should be good enough by now.

    Jesus, Lindy...

A: You're overreacting. Acknowledge that you dropped a 6th grade kneeslapper and move on. You're an adult.

One never brings up race, religion, politics or anal sex at a party unless it's one of those no pants parties.

B: Obvious troll is obvious. Don't let the sesquipedalian photog / polesmoking bohemian get to you.

I mean, it'll take his attention away from me. And we know how much I need my ego stroked.

    /sweet, sweet friction
