I think we now have to find a different thing for the countdown.

Hendo Hoverboards - World's first REAL hoverboard by Hendo Hover — Kickstarter

Hendo is introducing the world's first REAL hoverboard and hover developer kit. We are putting hover technology in YOUR hands.

Today was Show & Tell day at Hendo HQ...more to follow, and a HUGE announcement to come.

So where does the HENDO hoverboard stand today? Well, about 1 inch off the ground. As you can see from the video above, the prototype is real and it works! But to see it hover in person, and better yet, to defy gravity by riding it, is something you need to experience as well.
With the support of the Kickstarter community, we all can. We need your help to put the finishing touches on the Hendo Hoverboard, to help us produce them, and to create places to ride them.

Weren't Segways supposed to be "the next big thing" once the prices became more affordable? I have never seen anyone on a Segway IRL.

Personally, I'm holding out for a jet pack .

I see segways being used by mall cops. I don't know if that counts.

Not me, I've never seen a Segway is use IRL.

The Hoverboard sounds like a cool invention, and I can understand the folks involved in its development being excited, but I'm not sure about real world usefulness. But "back in the day" a lot of people couldn't see the future usefulness of aeroplanes.

Once the price drops significantly below $10,000 each and more importantly the underlying tech is refined to work on all non-porous surfaces with a more workable power source (what you see 1985 Marty using in Back to the Future II) there will be many, many uses for this.
