Help me plan my daughter's 3rd birthday party

    So...
Littlegirly's birthday is next week. We're having a little family get-together the night of her birthday. But we'd like to celebrate more the following weekend, invite friends and what-not. I think. I don't know. I haven't done anything to plan.

I was thinking inviting her friends to a park for cake and finger foods would be nice. Just get a bunch of people together to play.

Does that sound too silly? I probably need some sort of decorations. She likes pokemon, fairies, ponies, wild animals and bugs of all kinds... I was thinking of doing a nature-themed fairy thing. But then pokemon would be pretty awesome for a girl's party. Last year we did Alice in Wonderland. I don't want to touch princesses...

I was thinking we could take sticks and attach paper stars to them as fairy wands - and as a craft activity for the kids to do when they're there... but would they turn into weapons? eh...

  2. A bug party on the park sounds fun, although I don't know what kind of bugs you'd find this time of year where you are. Collect the bugs and identify them. Draw pictures of the bugs and name them.

Friends at the park sounds pretty fun to me. Decorations would be at a minimum, as well...maybe some themed napkins & plates, perhaps a cheap tablecloth. That's about all you'd need.

Liking wild animals reminded me of this—

"My daughter had a very specific birthday request: animals wearing birthday hats, having a party." Not gonna lie, I kinda want something like this for my own birthday cake :) You could use a giraffe, elephant, zebra...whatever instead. Oh, man. I want a giraffe cake. That would be fun.

Edited to add: you could also buy a bunch of bubbles...they're inexpensive and fun. Or maybe do a nature (or bug) themed scavenger hunt?

If we did the catching and drawing bug thing it would be like Pokemon, "gotta catch them all'

I'm really liking this bug adventure theme.
I have fabric with dragonflies and butterflies that could be a tablecloth. I have a bunch of 4" bug toys. And I have that Elefun game that shoots butterflies. Could get some colorful swoop nets at the dollar store. If it goes late enough we could set up a white sheet by a bright light to attract and collect bugs. Or I could just set up some pitfall traps in my backyard ahead of time. Could take turns looking at bugs under her little microscope, or maybe just a magnifying glass. For each kiddo. Hmmm...

Oh man, I feel like I'm teaching a biology lab - but for preschoolers.

I have successfully avoided birthday parties for children under the age of 12 for years, due to the disasters that they typically turn in to. So, I'm not much help. But, it sounds like the are some good thoughts here.
