i ran across this article today....

A Whole New Way To Play Video Games: Standing Up

and am intrigued. especially since i'm getting into the ground release of guild wars 2 and it was a test subject. it reminded me of all the hours i spend in arcades while playing street fighter II and double dragon and stuff. i think i might try it in my apt and set my desktop up on an adequately sized bureau i have.

anyone try this or have thoughts on it?

I haven't tried it, but I've read somewhere before our brains are most consciously activated and engaged while we're walking: so having a treadmill at a workstation/playstation is the ideal.

It would be weird at first, but I'd be willing to try even that. Sure enough, some of my best thoughts/ideas come while walking without distractions (e.g., an iPod).

i also find the idea of increased immsersion and engagement and fun as a benefit very appealing.

First thought that came to mind was if this gaming trend/recommendation came in direct response to some ongoing study/article featured over the past month/year, detailing how excessive sitting is the new smoking not healthy... despite the comfort factor it provides.

I heard about it on the terrestrial (audible) news, but here is a nice and concise article, concerning why we must not stay seated at all times. + plus...

    Post-EDIT:
When I was a younger lad, half of the time I engaged in gaming, I was standing up.
Giving myself the 20 seconds to ponder as to why this was, I have remembered three situations where this happened to be the case:

    1) in a crowded attic and/or basement filled with other bored and loud neon-clad youths, seating space was limited, so when it came your turn to mash and bash, you best move quickly to that awaiting warm-dripping controller to challenge; and having yourself in the dead-center of the floor, in the midst of the endless foot traffic that propels always-addled not-yet-teenagers to be on the move, thus deemed that one must stand and deliver, at times (those epic, yet obliviously-achieved combos).

    2) since the inception of true mobile video gaming, (I have owned various standalone platformers, the ones that sold for ~15 or less dollars, those that sometimes featured throwing-star ninjas, handheld poker, hatching a digital pet and having it feed fight to survive, and the semi-household-known, Game & Watch.) I have been an early and persistent adherent to mobile video devices. I still remeber the first time I saw, and mind-squealed, when I got hands-on experience with a GameGear. I also admit, that since the first Gameboy launched, I have owned nearly every iteration of the Gameboy line known on the seven seas (alas, I have not owned a true Gameboy Color, or a GBA micro/mini). Still, despite my claims that I have not been a gamer since 2004-06, I do own a Nintendo 3DS. I have no games to play other than a Monkey Ball, multi-coloured Links, and wind-up MK characters, I thought it a good investment at the time. This long diversion gets around that to my overall point, being: I have been, and health permitting, will always seek to be, the "guy on the go". When claiming such a title, video games must be able to move as I do, which usually involves lots of winding steps (due to my penchant for getting lost) and mounds of steps to climb (because I somehow always tumble to the bottom of every journey I take).

    3) To gain the "mental" advantage over your opponent. Short of planting yourself three inches in front of the video screen, and being the supreme twit of a hooligan-in-the-making; standing up and advancing toward the action, (usually accompanied by shouting) has the psych-out tendencies that some times makes it imperative that your compatriot(s) follow suit. I also used to do it because I got "tired" of just sitting around and gaming. (I've never been much a sitter; sadly, I'm not very adept at standing upright, either).

+ bonus: I just thought of another good reason why many of us might have engaged in many instances that pertained to standing up, whilst playing in particular, those video challenges: video arcades.
