What comes to your mind when you think of the first week of May? I tend to think of springtime flowers and the flying pig marathon. But there's a much darker history to this fair holiday. Worker's rebellions. Anarchy. This holiday is also known as International Worker's Day.

Sit-ins or strikes, May poles or marathons, picnics or parties - How do you plan to celebrate this joyous spring day?

I don't know about you guys, but I'm thoroughly entrenched in final exams. I'll write a paper, polish another two, and maybe if I'm lucky I'll get to plant something pretty before the impending thunderstorm hits.

I'm a ~month out from moving into my new house (OH BABY!) and I'm using this glorious day to organize movers, inform the utility companies, do change of address paperwork and all that other incredibly painful stuff associated with occupying a new dwelling. It's all about the ch-ch-changes.

    Happy International Workers' Day, comrades!

National differences and antagonism between peoples are daily more and more vanishing, owing to the development of the bourgeoisie, to freedom of commerce, to the world market, to uniformity in the mode of production and in the conditions of life corresponding thereto.

The supremacy of the proletariat will cause them to vanish still faster. United action, of the leading civilized countries at least, is one of the first conditions for the emancipation of the proletariat.

In proportion as the exploitation of one individual by another will also be put an end to, the exploitation of one nation by another will also be put an end to. In proportion as the antagonism between classes within the nation vanishes, the hostility of one nation to another will come to an end.

    — From Chapter II. Proletarians and Communists, The Communist Manifesto (1848), Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels
