so now that i am retired i would like to get back into going to the range. i am undecided between a S&W m&p9, or a sig 226. i have small hands for a guy and comfort a big factor. opinions or recommendations appreciated

M&P9 is good kit. I'd recommend an Apex trigger kit for a better break and cleaner reset. It's very ergonomic and a sweet shooter. No experience with the Sig.

I have not shot an m&p. I shot a p226 a few years ago. I just remember how freaking heavy it was compared to the polymer 9mm's. Of course weight is good for target shooting or a stay at home gun but not so pleasant for lugging around all day while concealed carrying.

Could you go to a range and rent them both?

I've seen on other boards that people claim the sigs that are now being made in new hampshire aren't as reliable as the old ones from west germany, but who knows.

doing the NRA course Sunday, going to the range will give me an idea on the weapons so that worked out. i'm not necessarily determined on those two handguns so all recommendations welcomed

any idea on the cost of that trigger job?

  6. I don't have any experience with the Sig. I do have a bit of experience with the M&P9. I really like it. It has great ergonomics and is very comfortable to shoot. I have small hands and that has not been problematic.

    sandman61,

    I've shot the S&W M&P 9mm (full size) and have owned a Sig P226 9mm for over a decade.

The S&W M&P has a comfortable frame but I found the round, goofy trigger to be a real show stopper for me. The Sig P226 is a fine pistol but suffers from being a DA/SA with a decocker. DA/SA is lame and a decocker is pointless. I also find the Sig trigger to be mushy. Both are fine. Pretty sure the S&W will be less expensive to buy new. If you have small hands and like the Sig setup, a P239 (compact frame, single stack mag) may fit your needs.

My big question is why hasn't a Glock pistol entered the picture here? The grip size is roughly the same for all of these pistols given that they are all double stack 9mm. The Sig P226 actually has a slightly larger grip, IIRC, due to the fact that it has a metal frame and separate plastic grip panels. The G19 is superb pistol with dummy-proof operation and if you haven't handled one, check it out. It'll change your life and make you leave your wife.

Do give the G19 a try. But, for a full size 9mm, I do think the M&P9 full size > the G17.
