Geek, Dweeb, Dork or Nerd

Discussion in 'General Discussions' started by ZombieSquirrel, May 14, 2014.

  1. It seems like people on this site use the terms a lot to describe themselves or others. (I call @cinnamongirl a nerd ALL the time...because she is and she embraces it.)

I probably identify more with the Dork classification as I love corny jokes and doing what others may think is dorky. I love roadside attractions and dressing up like a goober for parties.

    What are you?

Do you sleep in Star Wars jammies? Do you drink from a Klingon coffee mug? Are your weekends filled with dressing up as other characters? Do you think doing complex math problems is fun? Are you a history buff who thinks going to Gettysburg to learn about the Civil War is an acceptable vacation for a teenage girl? (Thanks mom)

Also, what is the difference between the terms? Are they different? Who would win in a fight to the death?

Let your Freak Flags Fly people.

That's my geek flag when it comes to music, gaming, movies, comics, science fiction, Dr. Who, politics, etc.
I've got a freak flag when it comes to sex.
I'm a dork when it comes to social interaction. I tend to miss cues that most people seem to catch naturally, find puns and low humor hysterical usually in the totally wrong circumstance and am way too honest for my own good. I tell stories that often require way too much backfill and my kids tell me I'm too nice (whatever that means).
I guess the nerd part comes from being all of the above.

  3. I will say that I am envious of Geeks like @cinnamongirl and 85% of the people on here. I am just not that passionate about anything. I enjoy things that others are passionate about, but I don't go to the degree that most do.

Like Zombies. I think they're cool and could totally happen. I watch The Walking Dead religiously and actively post on the thread here that relates to the show. I have zombie playing cards. A t shirt about zombies thanks to a TFP friend. I think about what I would do in case of a Zombie Apocalypse. I wouldn't say I'm passionate though.

Interestingly, I took the "geek, nerd, or dork test" on OKCupid not that long ago. My result was "modern, cool nerd" (?), but I scored in the 90s for both geek and nerd (and 54% in dorkiness. I'm clumsy and awkward.)

I like learning things. If I have a question I don't know the answer to, I'll look it up, and if it's interesting, I'll research it more. I learned about center pivot irrigation after flying out west for the first time this year, and seeing all the circular fields from the window of the plane. I like learning stuff about wildlife and endangered species, so I'll research an animal and share "fun facts" on faceyspace occasionally (which I haven't done in a while, actually... I need to get back on that.)

I like fantasy and sci-fi, and I frequently have lengthy conversations about Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, Marvel, Charles de Lint, Mistborn, Narnia, Harry Potter, and so on.

I like books...love books. I was often chastised as a kid for "always having my nose in a book," and I can remember a time or two when I was grounded from reading...yes, grounded. It only happened a couple of times, and probably because my parents figured it was the only way to really punish me at the time. I've done the Goodreads Challenge for four years running, and I've read 29 books so far this year.

And the big one...DragonCon. I look forward to it every year. It's a bit like coming home. I usually cosplay at least one day out of the four...most recently, I did Malcolm Reynolds "cross-play." I'd like to do Roger Wilco and/or Commander Keen this year.

Aaand, I'm typing too much, so I'll end with a quote that I love:

These days I'm not that enthusiastically passionate about anything; lots of irons in the fire, but none are white hot. At one time I was a total boxing nerd, which almost sounds like a contradiction of terms.

I remember seeing a Simpsons episode where Millhouse make a comment about looking like a nerd, but not being smart like one. I can totally relate.

My family spent several summers in the 80's seeing many of the of the major and not so major battle sites from the War Between the States. The highlights to me were attending the re-enactment for the 125th anniversary of the Battle at Gettysburg and seeing the cornfields and church at Antietam.

And I didn't even hit on video games, my love of '80s and '90s pop culture, Monty Python, or crossword puzzles.

I was a doing a informal photoshoot recently for some dance thing this summer with a group of kids in their early 20's and they were referring to the 90's music playing on one of those new-fangled smartphones as "That is old school", talking about helping me feel old. Almost as bad seeing a film about high school kids in the 90's called a "period piece".

Speaking of video games, if I was stuck on a that ever popular deserted island and could only choose one or two gaming systems they would likely be an Atari 7800 (still have one of those in working condition with games) and/or an 8 bit Nintendo. Having the options to play both the 2600 and 7800 games is big plus for the 7800.

    For me...
    • Geek for the IT stuff and all the media (and references to it)
    • Nerd for the Physics and other science fact...and philosophy.
    • Dork for being often oblivious and talking alot even if people aren't still interested.
    • Wonk for the politics
    • Spaz for the klutz stuff and the allergies.
Dweebfor using bullets in my lists...and going beyond the "designated" list here.

    Neo-Maxi-Zoom-Dweebie

I too have some of everything, in varying degrees.

Geek: Fantasy. This came to fruition in my teens but has suffered through adulthood. It's currently being reignited.

Nerd: Books. I read them, edit them, and may perhaps one day write them. Anti-pedantic grammarian. Socialist wordsmith.

Dork: Most days, I utter very few words. This means I often act a bit odd when I do end up interacting with people. It goes one of two ways: 1) I'll be reserved, or 2) I'll contract spontaneous verbal diarrhea. It depends on the circumstances.

Dweeb: I don't go out much. Once a month maybe. Maybe not.

I've always been a science guy, so I'm pretty much a geek by definition.

I get enthralled over things that most people couldn't give a damn about.

As for the others here who are like me......you know who you are...

I am most likely a Geek.

I am too socially functional to be a Nerd.

A friend/former coworker of mine posted a video of a cool Star Wars proposal yesterday. I recognized the hallway where it was filmed well enough to know it was the first floor of the Marriott in Atlanta....at DragonCon. w00t! (106 days!)

i would say im a nerd coz i love fantasy and sci-fi and if im goin out with a girl i have deal-breakers which if they don't pass im breaking up with them. For example they have to like DR.Who, Monty Python, and Spinal Tap. I swear to God, if they start quoting lines about the Spanish inquisition, i will impregnate them right then and their...
