Freelance blackmail

    A woman I know had an account on Ashley Madison (the "have an affair" web site). Since accounts for women are free, she never gave them her real name, address, or credit card number.

    But the email address she used (a throwaway) showed up in the Ashley Madison data dump, and she started getting spam from aspiring blackmailers.

    She shared the latest one:

    What is User Name Redacted doing about it? I assume she didn't pay. I don't know enough about the internet and ID security to know how much info could be gathered using a throwaway email address.

    On one forum a guy showed up telling sob stories which garnered him a lot of sympathy. In one case, however, an eBay seller showed up and posted his side of the story. Several members, myself included, started checking up on Sob Story Guy, and very quickly found his real name, real address, phone number, etc. But this guy wasn't very bright, he left an internet trail with personal info that even anybody could find.

    No, no, the recipient of that message thought it was hilarious. The spammer knew absolutely nothing about her besides her throwaway email.

    Also, she says she did not cheat on her husband. I suspect there was an element of lulz involved in her signing up.
