Would you be up for this? The US Bureau of Land Management needs volunteers to run Garnet, a haunted ghost town. In exchange for labor like clearing trails and running the gift shop, you'd get to live in a log cabin rent-free, and get a stipend.

Here's a little news article that caught my eye:

Here are the real details about the volunteer positions... volunteer

If I didn't have a family, this would be really honestly tempting. Very neat opportunity to spend a summer living rent-free, someplace beautiful.

Here's a flickr album that a photographer put together of Garnet:

The one or two week tour in the light house seen cool but what I would really like to do is find one to really live in.
Of course I'd have to get a satellite dish for internet but otherwise I'd be a happy camper.

I think I would need to have found a girlfriend before I would consider doing something like this. Even though I have no luck in the big city, there is still more of a chance then in the middle of Montana I'm guessing. (It is close by Missoula where the Adventure Cycling Association is located for some reason.) Visit Missoula | About Us | Adventure Cycling Association

Now, I would think the better option would be to find a group of outdoor enthusiasts or survivalists to hang out there for a few months. If you are just by yourself, it gets tough after a few weeks.

I'd do it for the free digs, not afraid of ghosts. (Rooby-Rooby-Roo!!)

But I'd go crazy for the lack of activities. I'm a city boy.
While I don't mind getting my hands dirty, it only holds my interest so long.

The isolation wouldn't bother me too much. But the level of comfort would play a role. If it meant no electricity and no running water, I could handle it, but would have to give it a lot of thought.

I would require a large stash of books. An eReader might be best as I'm a fast reader, the number of actual paper books required would take up a lot of room. Internet access wouldn't be a "must," but it would help me to maintain my sanity.

For a month, I think I'd be content. I'd probably pack a small solar panel to charge a phone and laptop. The phone would only be of use around civilization, but the laptop could be used for games and writing and e-books. Probably just get enough charge for little things here and there.

I would want a dog, though. A nice big lab to take hiking.

As for ghosts... The house I grew up in was haunted by a former occupant who committed suicide. She never bothered me much (just saw her from time to time) but she drove my sis up the wall with her antics. As long as the ghosts aren't violent or insane, I'm good.
