i love when i hear a new one of these or am reminded of one i knew and liked before. it's one of my favorite things in the english language. i've started jotting them down when i hear one now to maybe be used in writing later.

the one that comes to mind right away is "be that as it may..." i've tried to get this into some conversations lately but it hasn't been the right time yet. i also like "nevertheless" even though it's more a word than an expression, and "duly noted" and "if you don't mind" or "if it's not too much trouble" can be funny. there there's "all thing's being equal..." and i've been using "that said..." or "having said that" a whole lot in forum posts lately.

do you have any you'd like to share?

good stuff so far... i just remembered another one i got from watching battlestar galactica in a scene where a starship is crash landing out of control onto the deck of the carrier. i say it now whenever anyone old or clumsy is incoming....

Do you just want regular everyday to day phrases? Because that's all I see here so far.

I like a combination of expressions myself. Phrases put together to convey emotions never cease to impress me.

For example: Major Payne "I'll shove my foot so high up your ass the water in my knee will quench your thirst!"

More to come as I think of them.

  11. Jetée

    Jetée Getting titled

topical: Rolls off the tongue, by Andrew + Andy
(an interactive guessing-game + gallery; puns + pictures)

commentary: I encountered the site a few months back, and whilst I admit that I don't play along nearly enough; ('despite the fact' it is but a weekly feature) it is a wholly-engrossing and entertaining diversionary glance that allows me to think with my mind's eye, life's memory & a rolling list of how I play with my words on a daily basis.

in regards to the original premise: --(to note)
Unless you notice that I have a discernable voice, I have no favourites when it comes to re-uttered phrases, idioms and wordplay-predilections; I simply no longer have the memory-retention to hold any more than eight words at a time in my head (I'm sure I've stated this before, in a different era and context).
Therefore, it takes an inordinate length of time for me to form a thought, and why my simple defense to a conversation is to in/e-voke thought into those that surround me, and feed off of their reaction(s).

Perhaps that was too long an explanation? I do not take the time to remember and regurgitate sayings (tho I thoroughly do enjoy their histories).

    You spelled "'MERICA" wrong.

For fucks sake! I hate this phrase! What does it even mean?

Friend: Well, it is what it is.
Me: What does that even mean?
Friend: It is, what it is.
    Me: Fuck you man.

Eh, there are four primary versions of the exclamation of the Greatest Nation Ever.

    Redneck: "'Merica."

    The Other Guys: "America!"

Team America - World Police: "America - Fuck yeah!"

The "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan: "USA! USA! USA!"

    ...

It's the PC way of saying things did suck, currently suck, will suck, etc.

Saying is so popular in my crowd I'm considering getting it tattooed.

No more cliche than the dorks at the gym with their DIE LIVING ink.

To the rest of us, it's things like "the Yoo Ess" and "the States."

Because, you know, the Americas take up half the world, not just that bat-shit crazy part in the middle there.
