well how about it TFP? what martial arts do you know? where did you learn? did you compete?

i guess my mando boxing class is the closest thing i've ever had to actual training, but there is definitely alot more technique to it than i thought there was.

    I'm a shitty fighter.

I hold ranks in American Freestyle Karate (instructor was trained by Pat Burleson himself) and the US Army Combatives program. I have also studied Kenpo Karate. American Freestyle Karate, as taught by my instructor, includes the range of mixed martial arts skills (striking and grappling) as well as knives, sticks and dealing with handguns. Martial arts are only useful for self defense when one can spar close to full strength and in useful scenarios such as two-on-one while wearing street clothing. I've gained a lot flexibility, had a ton of fun and met quite a few hot girls while training.

2 years Kung Fu, 2 years Japanese Jiu Jitsu, 6-month Krav Maga intensive course and 7 years (and counting) of Muay Thai Kickboxing. Between my second and fourth years in Muay Thai, I was the instructor of the beginner session at my dojo.

I've had three amateur Muay Thai fights in total, two of which I won (TKO + unanimous jury decision) and lost the other (split decision).

Currently considering to take up Wu Shu whenever I move out of Afghanistan.

I've done a little wing chun and TKD, but my main self defense is looking pissed off. Apparently that works

I didn't really get involved with the martial arts but I did box for roughly four years.... I thought I was doing alright, I would talk shit to my trainer and he would beat the living piss out of me till I puked. I loved it because I thought it was good punishment for my body.

I tried taekwondo for 3 weeks before I had ear surgery, which took me out for several months so my membership expired.

I am just starting Krav Maga training. The gym I go to also has classes in Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, MMA/fight class, and just straight boxing, so I might dabble in those a little bit as I get more confident with my Krav.

Childhood and teens: Bu-Jitsu - my teacher, Mishiku's development of the works of his teacher, Kano. Looking back, it was useless except for defending against, and disabling attackers. It was not a martial art - it was an ugly process, without art or finesse.

20s until mid 40s: Tai chi, and a love/worship of my teacher Sue McM; through the years, she and I maintained an obsessive sparring relationship and knocked the bejuggery out of each other at all speeds from very slow to very fast.

Bu-Jitsu gave me what I needed for survival. Tai Chi kept was great as a system with which to compete/cooperate with fellow tai-chiers: it kept me exercised and martially alert, but was of limited use in street warfare except for adding an element of 'confusement through amusement'.

I'm certified level 2 MAC (modern Army combatives) which is a sort of simplified MMA style used in the Army. Its nothing particularly great, but its quick and effective for RL situations.

Also took a little Aikido when I was a teenager.

I got up to a blue belt in Tae Kwon Do in like the 2nd grade, which was really 90% bullshido. In practical terms I say that I "know" Krav Maga in the sense that my mother (Israeli) taught me enough about fighting to keep me alive and I worked out what was or wasn't effective the hard way. Looking back I'd probably say that it's not so much that I was a good Fighter as it was that I was good at fighting, if only by virtue of sheer mean.

I have an acquaintance who, despite being built like half of a buffalo, is a surprisingly acrobatic capoerist... or as I call him a student of Impractical Fu.

Krav Maga is great for self-defense in everyday life, and will build and strengthen your confidence in your physical actions. When you're done with it, I'd suggest you take up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to familiarize yourself with locks, chokes, etc as they can be very useful in combination with Krav Maga disarmament techniques.

And since Muay Thai is my passion, take that one right after. It's good. It's really good. (Plus you get to knee and elbow people in all sorts of places.)

Yeah, this is the way to go for women. Given that the typical woman is smaller and less likely to deliver disabling shots by striking, it makes much more sense for women to learn BJJ-style techniques since most of their encounters will involve a man (or woman) grappling with them like something off a bad Lifetime suspense thriller. IIRC, Krav Maga is kinda like Kenpo without all the ridiculous two-part attack nomenclature.

Based on the police I've talked to and women I've trained with, you don't tend to see too many male attackers get into slugging matches with women.

    Unless they're married, that is.

Biggest thing is that 80% strength practice. If you haven't been choked out before and haven't been smashed in the nose, you're missing good training.

    ...

Yeah, I don't get the Capo people at all. It's pretty (African tribal dance meets Cirque du Soleil) and I understand the history (covert slave fight training disguised as "crazy darkie dancing"), but it's like all things in life: if it's too complicated to master easily by yourself training with friends, you're not going to pull it off while getting hit in the face. Turning yourself into a tumbling chimp in jeans on the concrete is a bad way to start a fight.

Don't be ridiculous. This is the post-GWOT military. Combatives training is done exclusively in Soffe XT46 clothing.
