Drones

Discussion in 'General Discussions' started by ZombieSquirrel, Mar 11, 2015.

  1. When writing a newsletter article about a coworker and his recent work in DC, I learned that he is well known in the drone community as an proponent for the safe and legal use of drones. He even has songs about drones. He's a celebrity in the unmanned aerial vehicle community.

I wanted to share his latest video as it is a call to action.

Living in the heart of flyover country, I can say that lots of people here advocate the use of them for agricultural purposes.

Lots of good crop/land data can be gathered. Why not?

  3. Since he and I work for the state Extension office....that's what he was presenting to the USDA while in DC.

They'll need to setup a fairly large drone "disruptive" field zones in no-fly areas like Forts, important buildings and such.

Because sooner or later, it will go beyond, pegging them one by one.
A terrorist, domestic or foreign, could easily setup and program many to simply fly in many in volume with explosives tied to them, if not timed to go off.

Wouldn't be so hard to make it look like the end of The Matrix 3, with a variety of relatively nearby hidden launch sites.
The modular capacity of these is significant.

However, I could also see a lot of good use for them too...especially in scientific study.
    And urban dynamics...

As with anything, there is a balance.

They're already having problems even testing these...getting caught in branches, people taking packages and such.
They're finding it's not very cost effective.

I have an engineer friend who designed some very small uav's for his PhD project. 4" in diameter. A couple of times I got to go out to a mountain top to test them with him. Super neat. He had a little business for a while where he flew them over parades and sporting events to give a unique view.

The last I heard about them was they were looking at having them launch from a truck either parked or driving through a neighborhood. The flights wouldn't be as far, so battery life wouldn't be a problem. I still think it is a ways off, but I wouldn't totally rule it out.

Like all technology, drones will be/are a problem in the wrong hands. And I don't see how any security measures can stop their misuse.
