Do you get your flu shot?

I swear I've made this thread in the past, but I couldn't find it. Apparently, "flu" is too short of a word to be searched. This latest iteration is inspired in part by mixedmedia.

Do you get your flu shot? Why or why not?

I definitely get a flu shot. I work in a cesspool of germs. Every day, kids walk into my classroom coughing, hacking, and sneezing. It's disgusting, but at least they're not wiping it on my shirt like the preschoolers did. I don't want to get it, and I don't want to expose others to it. I'll take as much immunity as I can get! I've not gotten mine yet this year, but I plan on getting it soon.

Every year. They do it at work, just have to sign up for the timeslot, and go to the nurse's station to get it.

Otherwise, the city holds scheduled clinics from November through Feb. Or you can drop into any pharmacy and they dispense for free as well.

I have another doc appt. in November and I'll more than likely get one then.
I didn't get one last year and I was fine, but I don't think I'll gamble this time.

I normally have a good immune system, and so I never bothered with a flu shot. I've always told myself that I'd start getting one at a certain age. I got the flu last year that was followed by a nasty cold. It put me out about a month in total. The kicker? I was totally offered a flu shot when I was in to see my doctor for another reason, but I turned it down. It was then that I decided I should get a flu shot each year. I'm due for a checkup with my doctor anyway, and now that I'm a few years short of 40, I'm sure my immune system isn't what it used to be.

Throw on top of that the fact I don't get outside as much as I used to (and ride public transit), and that my SO brings home every germ imaginable from school. Also, I'm currently doing both Muay Thai and hapkido, which includes six 1-hour workouts (three back-to-back sessions) per week that likely suppress my immune system somewhat.

In other words, I'm totally getting a flu shot this year.

I get one every year. Why? Cause my wife says to get one.
I got mine the other day when I went to the doctor.

I'm required to because I work in healthcare. The year before I started getting them, I got something similar to the flu that lasted almost two weeks and was given to a lot of people around me. I hope to not have that experience again. I got this year's shot just a couple days ago - a little later than usual for me, but still within the optimal time frame.

With flu shots so cheap, I think everyone should get one if they don't have an allergy to the ingredients. You never know when you'll encounter someone with a compromised immune system, and if you're carrying the virus (even if your immune system can handle it), that contact could kill someone or put them in the hospital for an extended period of time. Herd immunity is a great thing!

  8. Nope, never have. I'm going to take my chances. But if my luck runs out Tamiflu works well if caught early enough.

GeneticShift Show me your everything is okay face.

I used to get them all the time, through high school because I'd get stuck at my yearly checkup, and then through college because they were cheap as fuck for students and all I had to do was go downstairs to the dorm basement.

I haven't the past two years, mostly because I've been lazy and haven't thought about it until it was already flu season, but I've been lucky and haven't gotten the flu recently. I really should head to Walgreens, but we'll see.

Yes. I get it every year. Thanks for the reminder - I still need to get mine this year.
It makes a big difference for me. I can't afford to be sick as a dog for a week to get over a flu.

^ This. I'd never gotten one before last year when our hospital instituted a requirement for all employees to get one. One of my colleagues isn't terribly thrilled at the prospect and would forgo it if it didn't have employment-related implications (you can object for religious reasons, but legitimate ones), but it's not a super huge deal to me, especially when they make it so convenient. So there you go.

I never got them until I started nursing school. If I don't have a flu shot, I have to wear a face mask the entire time I am in clinical. Which would be a total drag.

I'm pretty much a proponent of all vaccines now - and I've had them all. Meningitis, hep a and b, pneumonia, flu, Td. Didn't get the varicella vax only because I titred out...which was good because it's an expensive series. Like ponypotato said, though, the vaccines are not only protection for you, but for other people you come in contact with. That flu may be only a minor inconvenience for you, but it can kill someone with a compromised immune system. Around 20,000 people still die from the flu every year.

Since I'm a contractor, I can't get them at work. I'll need to drive down to the HMO.

I'll need to call ahead and schedule tetnus at the same time. It's been 10 years and I'm a clod.

I get flu shots every year cause my immune system suck ass! I got a flu every year since I can remember and the last two years is the first time I've gone annually without a flu. Those things are awesome!

Ahh, people who need convincing that water is wet or sky is blue.

Does that work? Also, relevant username brah!

never thought I'd say that on TFP.

I have a very good immune system and haven't felt the need to get one. I do volunteer with the disaster relief with the ARC and they nag at me all the time to get one. Maybe when I get old.

My healthcare job is offering them this year at no cost to us I think. Passing this year, same as every year.
My immune system has been strong so far in my life but I doubt my current "work way too many hours with not enough sleep" schedule is what a doctor would recommend to keep it that way.

Of course as I'm considered in a high risk category. Spouse's company pays for it either when I go to my annual allergist appt or with a voucher so we go as a family to Costco or Walgreen's, wherever, and all get stuck.
I love all the misconceptions about what "the flu" is, how one contracts it and what exactly a flu shot can and cannot do for you. ;)
