Food Do we really not have a thread dedicated to sandwiches?

Sure, I've seen threads dedicated to post-event sandwiches. Sex, Thanksgiving, events like that. But what about an everyday, non-special-occasion, non-sweaty, low-stress Sandwich thread?

Peanut butter & honey? Breaded tenderloin? Manhattan? Monte Cristo? Do we dare open it up to burgers? Open-faced, stuffed, wrapped, sliced, pressed, fried; they offer a universe of possibility.

Each sandwich should be a work of art, or at least exist on an epic scale. What are your favourites? What are the sickest, most outrageous sandwiches you've ever had? Do you have a specialty sandwich that you make yourself?

My favourite sandwich is probably a ploughman's.

I also quite like crab sticks with mayo and lettuce.

The worst I ever had was peanut butter and jam. Its a classic in America apparently and when I was in the US on holiday someone made me one... I guess its an acquired taste.

I used to go sailing when I was younger (just up and down the river, never dared go out to sea!) and where my boat was moored (this was a cheap one man plastic thing that cost £300, not some fancy yacht) there was this pub called the mayflower. The beer garden was over looking the river, and in the summer, after working hard and having a nice sail, used to have a cheese ploughman's with a pint of lager shandy.... life doesn't often get better.

They are hamburger sandwiches, so yes.

I'm a fan of burgers. Since becoming vegan, I have found a few good alternative patties. For me, it really comes down to the garnishes. I like avocado, spinach, hot sauce, dijon mustard, tomatoes, friend onions, sauerkraut, etc. Stuff like that. I like much of the same on other sandwiches, including fried tofu or tempeh sandwiches.

Sandwiches are a great invention. It comes down to quality bread as well.

I wanted to leave it open to the participants whether we include burgers. Since they're in.....
We have a joint in Indianapolis called the Red Lion Grog House. They offer up a burger known as The Waltimate. Next time I go, I need to ask what the history is around this monstrosity. Somebody had to have been wasted off his ass to conceptualize it. Imagine a bacon-cheeseburger. With a fried egg. To leave well enough alone at this point would probably make it the best burger I've ever had. But then they put sliced fresh jalapeno on it. And peanut butter. When I first read about it on the menu, I had to ask the waitress if it was awesome or just weird. She told me it's 'weirdly awesome.' Honest and true she was. When that creamy peanut butter melted and mixed with the egg yolk, it was one of the most extraordinary condiments I've ever had.
The truth is, the experience affected me so profoundly that when I make hamburgers at home, I peanut butter on mine.

  6. Ah, you're in Indy. Kind of figured when you opened with breaded tenderloin. I love them, grilled tenderloins also.

On Wed I will have lunch at a restaurant that has a salmon club on its menu.

I am a huge fan of the sandwich. My go to sandwich has to be the Peanut Butter and Jam. I have lived on these.

Our house can go through 1kg of peanut butter in a week (teenaged son... need I say more?).

While I will go for just about any sort of sandwich, here are the ones of which I am particularly fond:

Grilled Cheese (many variations but try it with mustard or a slice of pear)
Egg Salad (old school comfort food)
Club (roast turkey or chicken, hard boiled egg slices, lettuce, tomato, cheese, bacon, mayonaise)

I love, love, love a good club sandwich. I really cannot resist it. I especially like them with avocado.

Mostly, I eat sandwiches with veggies on them these days--thinly sliced tomato, cuke, and mayo, sometimes pesto mayo. Trader Joe's makes a nice vegan spread that is like cream cheese; I really like it on my tomato/cuke sandwiches. I also like maple bacon tempeh on sandwiches, or curried tempeh salad--it's sort of like a curry chicken salad, but with tempeh instead.

Growing up, we always had soup and sandwich makings on hand. Even now, if my dad offers to make you some food, the first thing he's likely to offer you as an option is grilled cheese.

A slice of tomato atop a slice of provolone broiled.. simple but lovely with just a pinch of salt and pepper.

A piece of toast with avocado dusted with a little garlic salt. Sometimes I use avocado slices, other times I will mash the avocado with a little butter and spread it on toast, delicious.

Egg salad with a good leafy lettuce and homemade pita bread.

    Falafel sandwich, yum.

    Shawarma

    I guess I have a few favorites.

Day to day, I don't like sandwiches. I much prefer a salad or something hot. But when I am sick or depressed, I must have a tuna sandwich (chunk light, pepper, finely chopped onion, dill weed and Miracle Whip, NEVER EVER Mayo) on toast with either sliced cucumber or tomato. For whatever reason (and I have had this discussion with friends),it seems no one else can make a better sandwich (or salad) than oneself can.

In the absence of Miracle Whip, 1/2 teaspoon of sugar or/and sweet pickle relish. I prefer the white albacore over the chunk light, and have to have it with real butter on the bread or toast, crusts removed and cut into quarters. (I'm pretty anal about my tuna which is probably not tuna anyway.) Throw in a bowl of creamy tomato soup and I'm in heaven.

I'll mention I've tried peanut butter and jam, once I learnt that jelly means jam. Yup ... I acquired it. The treble-tang and strong upper mid-range flavour of the jam gently crosses over to the peanut butter's lower midrange taste and subwooferish tongue-hugging textures.

    Now ... My Favourite sandwiches

Bacon ... two slices of white bread and a little butter. Back bacon grilled.

Bacon and tomato ... similar to above, but some tomatoes have been rendered down in to mush in a little pan and a tiny bit of sugar added. This mush is brushed over the bacon before the top layer of bread is added. If I am lazy, I do a variation on the Bacon and tomato, which is to just pour tomato ketchup over the bacon.

Bacon and cheese ... Grated cheddar is sprinkled over the bacon when the sandwich is half assembled. This is then put under the grill enough to melt the cheese, then the top layer of bread is added.

A recent thing I've started to do is to cut the bacon up into small pieces and sprinkle it on to the lower slice ... this prevents the sandwich being destroyed by some big chunk which drags everything apart because it refuses to be bitten.

For all of these ... om nom nom
Except on rare occasions when I perform the Bacon Sandwich Making Ceremony with full mindfulness, in which case, Om Mana Padme Nom.

Hah! When it comes to racing obsession, basketball, football, more specifically the deification of the freaking Colts, and the like, I will firmly assert that I'm not from around here, having moved to Indiana from Missouri--when I was 5. But I'm damn proud to admit I live here when it comes to the humble, glorious tenderloin! Especially since I live right around the corner from Edward's Drive-In, home of the best tenderloin, featured on the Travel Channel, acclaimed by Adam Richman on Man vs Food. I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to my tenderloins (insert lewd joke here....I'll wait.) Mustard, pickle, done.
