I'm curious what foods/recipes you make/use for when you're cooking for your SO...

Being a guy, I'm all for pasta because who doesn't like stereotypes....

Basically I start with Feta Cheese melting and then I mix in Thyme and White Zinfandel to thin the sauce out. I may add Garlic or Pepper to add some more flavour... the noodles never really mattered to me, I like the sauce, it was simple and easy to make.... but I'm thinking of branching out.... so I need ideas....

Lighter pasta dishes are my preference. The idea is to give her the carbs for the energy boost without weighing her down, and give her the, uh, protein later. Wink.

Of course, I eat 4x as much, load up on the garlic and red pepper flakes, so when she's frisky and ready to go, I'm semi-comatose and blasting raging hot farts all night. Oops.

  3. In my single days, I would ask what they would like to eat and go shopping for the ingredients and cook it with them. Or teach them how to cook it, with proper guidance on technique...

Martin's first meal he made for me on a date was Stuffed Peppers. For dessert he bought Angle Food Cake and topped it with blackberries and whipped cream. Still one of my all time favorite meals.

When I want to make something special for him these days it would be Spanakopita. If it's a dessert I would make home made Peanut Butter Cups.

It's true. I'll still break out the stuffed peppers from time to time -- they're tasty and easy to make.

I also do a few pastas. I've been known to do carbonaras or alfredos.

I think the important thing is to do something you can do well. It doesn't necessarily have to be complicated; it's better to have something simple that's cooked well than something fancy that isn't.

One of the first meals Eden made for me was eggplant parmigiana. It's kind of why I moved in with him ;)

If I'm cooking (which I really don't do that often), I'm more likely to go for stir-fry type dishes, or, like so many other have said, pasta. My very favorite meal to make is Italian rice & beans, which I haven't made in a very long time, actually. Very simple dish, but so tasty.

Of course, it doesn't help that Eden's not big on rice OR pasta, two of my favorite things. Hmph.

  7. Been many, MANY, years since I have, but as I recall, my favorite thing to cook for a date was....BREAKFAST! :D

An ex still invites me over when he cooks venison or something special and doesn't have someone to share it with. Venison pumpkin curry is my favorite of his "date" dishes, and goetta sandwiches was by far my favorite breakfast.

When I'm cooking for a date, I like to grill if it's possible. Lately, the specialty for me and my roommate has been chicken shish kabobs.. caribbean lime jerk seasoned. They're fabulous. Otherwise, I like to bake or grill fish and roast some veggies as well. I suppose you could say cooking fish is one of my "food compatibility" tests.

A date night at my house is.. Us starting off opening a bottle of wine, talking about goofy stuff while we cook chicken parm, (which my husband is the bomb at making by the way) finishing that bottle and open another. Then heading to the garage to finish our evening. We will sit out there for hours bullshitting and daydreaming about our lives and the things we want to do. Some of the things we ctually do and some are so far fetched it would be hard to achieve. But I wouldn't change it. I love our date nights. We haven't had a good one in awhile, so that should be a goal for us soon...

When I started dating my husband, I had to relearn how to cook, as he is a vegetarian. So the first meal I made for him on a date was vegetarian chili. To be honest, my veggie chili was pretty good from the start, and so the veggie chili I make now is very similar. The first meal he made for me was cheese tortellini with stewed tomatoes and green beans.

Mm, veggie chili sounds good. I think that'll be dinner tonight.

Oh yes the sauce is definitely what matters. Never tried using Feta with White Zinfandel. Interesting.

I have no specific goto - my wife keeps saying I should write stuff down, because I'm not really a recipe kinda guy. So a date night meal is more likely to consist of something both of us are hunkering for. Last time was just simple scotch fillet steak cooked on the barbie, with barbecued mushrooms and onions and some kind of potato. Nothing very complicated but it doesn't need to be if you can cook a steak well :)

Date nights for us mean either farming the children out (usually to the grandparents) or cooking twice (early for them and later for us).

Usually something on the grill. We both love a good steak, or some grilled chicken.

We like to grill fish. Favorites are swordfish, shrimp-kabobs, salmon, and grilled asparagus tips on the side. Against the seafood rules, but we prefer Pinot Noir. Something about it being grilled and red wine just seems to go well together.

You are doing it right! :)

Traditional "white is for fish/poultry and red is for beef" has pretty much been thrown by the wayside. If you have a robust fish or chicken dish, especially grilled, red wine is fine. Especially if it's a light to medium bodies red like a Pinot.

I say grilled swordfish or salmon with a nice Pinot sounds awesome.

Salmon and pinot noir are perfect together. It's one of my favorite food/wine pairings, actually.
