Food Convection ovens? Who has one? Who has used one? Who wants one?

I think I'm going to surprise my wife with some new appliances for our anniversary this year. It was partially my parents fault/idea. Our dishwasher has been underperforming the last few months, and we've considered replacing it. When I mentioned it to my parents, they said they wanted to get together with my siblings and get us a new one. I decided that it would be perfect timing. If they wanted to do that, I would make my gift a matching oven and let her be surprised to have both. Our current appliances were put in when the house was new (10-11 years ago) and the original owners picked medium to low grade GE models. One of the burners on the gas range doesn't like to light, the oven is ok but doesn't seal great, making it inefficient and setting off smoke alarms over 425* even if stuff isn't burning, etc.

I am pretty sure I've picked out the model I going with. I am fortunate enough to have a good hook-up through one of my customers to get many major name appliances for far below list price.

    This is what I'm considering:

Amazon.com: KitchenAid 30 In. White Gas Range - KGRS505XWH: Appliances

Our other appliances are white, and I don't want to upgrade to stainless, so I'll probably get these two in white as well.

My main question is concerning the convection oven, since I've never had one.

Does anyone here have one? How often do you use it? What are the pros and cons in your opinion? Any overall thoughts?

  2. Appliances for your anniversary? Ever the romantic aren't you? Socket wrenches for Valentines Day, perhaps? :p

Have a convection oven. Never use it except as a normal oven,

A couple years ago it was a new king size sleigh bed and mattress. My master plan is to keep her perpetually in the bedroom or the kitchen, depending on whether hungry or horny is winning out at the moment. ;)

Seriously, this will rock her socks off. As much as she loves to cook and hates dishes, having a more stout dishwasher and a higher end oven will blow her away. :)

[insert outraged statement regarding the presumptuous nature of the world's male population and the derogatory connotations of "gifting" kitchen appliances to your wife in this modern day and age; obviously-justified insult]

    :p

I approve of the oven's design.

But much like Craven, I haven't the slightest clue what to do with a convection oven than with a normal one, except that restaurants use them.

We have a convection-capable oven; I seldom use the convection setting. It's actually not bad for baking, where you want more even heat distribution, but I don't do a lot of baking; and it can be OK for slow-cooked foods like brisket, but you can still do those in a regular oven, and I tend to like good old fashioned cooking with gas flame.

  6. i have an electric oven and i use the convection setting all the time. it gives an even cook which i think is a great function. its even great for potatos and pizzas i find.

if i was going to change 2 out of 4 or 5 appliances, i'd change the lot and move to stainless. In another few years when another of the low range GE appliances go, you're going to be kicking yourself for not going stainless for the lot.

hey, ive got an idea, why dont you sell one of those concert tickets to finance the appliances ;)

  7. Put a gift wrapped bracelet or earings in the oven, and pretend it was a funny gag you were pulling - else you will likely get a workmate for xmas, and a plank of wood and some screws for your birthday.
At least there was implied romance in the new bed, and it says you find her attractive. We have a white oven, and the mastiff spit wipes off easily.

I've worked with convection ovens at past jobs. I really like them. They shave off some cooking time. The family I used to work for also had one with a proof setting for proofing dough. I loved it because it meant we could make pretzels and pizza dough in half the time. I'd certainly buy one.

Love my convection oven. The skin on roasts and such comes out wonderfully and baking is much more consistent when the heat comes from all sides.

That said: a Bosch dishwasher will get you laid.

I miss the Bosch. Wonderful dishwasher. I will never purchase anything else.

I am opposed to stainless for a couple of reasons. First, the extra care with cleaning/polishing. Second, I sell steel to appliance makers, and am inside some very large appliance makers' factories almost weekly. I sell them everything BUT stainless. So I am supporting myself by not buying stainless. :p Finally, the overall cost of doing that the way I would want to would be way out of budget. I can squeeze in both a dishwasher and an oven, but a fridge too would knock the whole project out of my budget.

I know my wife. She will squeel with joy over a dishwasher and an oven. Probably cry. I'll even place bets on it if anyone so desires. :p
I'll have to double check on the proof setting. That would be awesome, and several I looked at did specifically mention that.

Isn't that alone enough to make it worth it? :D

I'm getting more set on a convection oven by the minute.

Bosch is out because they are on the "bad guy importer who doesn't buy from my company" list. :p

That's just sad. They're the best dishwasher ever. Seriously. I miss how quiet that thing was.

I love, love, love our Bosch dishwasher. I would totally swoon over a convection oven. Of course, we'd probably end up arguing over who gets to use it each night.

I have heard from someone else with this Kichenaid model that you can be in the same room and not even know it's on unless you put your ear to the door. Someone remind me after March 18th (just ordered them a few mins ago, that is the date I picked for delivery, our annivesary is the 21st) and I shall report back.

EDIT - HH Greg's website has 41 reviews of the dishwasher I ordered. It got 4.6 out of 5.0 stars. EVERY single one of the 41 reviews marked "quiet" as a pro to this unit. 40 of the 41 clicked "would recommend to a friend".

GeneticShift Show me your everything is okay face.

As others have said, I have an oven with a convection setting. I use it for baked goods, and things that are more fragile around the edges. Once you figure out the recipes that work better in convection, it will be great. Hope she likes it!
