I didn't find the prep as awful as it was hyped up to be. I washed it down with unsweetened apple juice which also helped to speed up the throughput. I held my nose, took a few large gulps, chased it with the juice, repeated till done. It was nasty but only for the first couple of swallows. The rest wasn't awful, really.

Maybe I didn't have that much to eliminate but I don't remember a marathon shitting session. I think two, maybe three toilet episodes did the trick. All told, it was maybe an hour and half between the time I took the prep liquid and the last visit to the toilet. I slept well, went for my colonoscopy first thing the next morning, was knocked out, and when I came to the doctor told me I had the cleanest bowel he'd ever seen. :)

The whole thing was less uncomfortable than a trip to the dentist.

Yeah, there is some farting.

  4. Went through it a few years back. The stress over the anticipation is worse than the procedure itself. Relax. You'll wake up and think, "Is that all there is?"

Drink it, take it, be thankful for what it's for.

Dude, I had a cystoscopy. There is little more shocking amongst the relatively harmless procedures than going into the urologist's office to have him pull the rubber tube out of your cock like it was just another day in the office.

  6. I had a colonoscopy 3 weeks ago. Whatever I drank was horrendous. Tried to down the full 16 oz at once but couldn't, took three gulps. Then I had to do it again 4 hours later. Just about vomited on that one. But nothing was found so I don't have to do this again or quite a while.

My wife had a colonoscopy back in August. Two days later she was getting a cancerous tumour removed from her colon.

Suck it up and take the test.

Mix it with apple juice. Not that bad. Just remember to lay on your stomach when it's all over.

I recall as a child being told by someone they poured about two whole containers of Hershey's Chocolate Syrup into the stuff to cover the taste. I would think for a colonoscopy, as opposed to a barium scan, that would probably break the rules since it's not clear... but hey it can't hurt to ask.

WELL, done with that...no problems...the "after gas" was fun, felt like you were going to s**t yourself, but it was all air..
and, as previously noted...the actual proceedure was...I'm going to put you to sleep, ....... thats it...woke up and said, when do we start....
nope its over....so the worst part is the prep, and you don't really need to drink all 100 gallons of that stuff, about 2/3 will do as long as the "outflow" is clear...........best part..at my age almost 77 that will be the Friggin' last time....5 years from now I AIN'T GONNA WORRY ABOUT IT...

Glad to hear it went well.

A few years ago my dad was diagnosed with colon cancer. They found it during a routine colonoscopy, and they caught it very early. He had surgery shortly after and has been cancer-free since. He still has to go in every six months for a full-body scan.

Everyone should go in for their routine screenings. They could save your life.

My tip for handling the horrible liquid: make sure it's kept in the fridge, as cold as you can. AND - this is key - drink it with a straw, with the straw as far back in your mouth as you can comfortably get it and still be able to suck on the straw. That gets it down pretty quickly and painlessly, with very little impact on your taste buds.

That's what I said to my wife as she took a very long time sipping and sipping and sipping. I told her to just get it over with as quickly as she could since it was not going to get better as time went on.

The hospital that did the tests had it available room temp and cold depending on preference and offered straws.

This is actually the best idea I've heard yet, I'll remember that if they want to scope me from the other end instead of just upper. I imagine with a good bendystraw you could probably skip the tastebuds entirely.

How about lying down and having someone pour it down...or better yet mix with VODKA (its a clear liquid !!)
Sorry about that I'm just feeling so good today, you know how you IMAGINE what COULD happen....
(next problem is when do you poop, now that there is nothing there,....) again sorry....

11 years ago, my father took his first sick day in around ten years for what they assumed would be a routine appendectomy. His doctor had never recommended a colonoscopy and a three inch tumor had ruptured his colon, peppering his abdominal cavity with cancerous cells before it could be removed. Two years later, he was dead.

For anyone who hasn't yet, suck it up and take the test.

Even SpikeTV, bastion of maturity that is, ran a "Check Up or Check Out" campaign a ways back. I think we can officially put it on the list of unconventionally manly things.

    ps, NO SYMPTOMS
THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT PROCEEDURE, DO IT NOW
