I went to one once about ten years ago to do a series of tests, as I was having chest pains. I received a clean bill and a go-ahead for all sorts of exercise. It turns out, it was just stress.

I had an echocardiogram, which is basically an ultrasound of your heart, rather than your baby. The imaging allowed the doctor to see how my heart was ticking and whether there was anything amiss.

I also did a series of stress tests. They monitored my heart rate and ventricles and arteries and stuff. We had a good laugh when they had to really crank up the treadmill in speed and elevation just to get me to an adequate heart rate for measurement. Like I said, I got a clean bill and a green-light for exercise.

I think it depends on why you're going and what they're looking for.

At a minimum an initial consult will involve the Dr. reviewing your history, examining you and looking at any evaluations you may have already had.
Where it goes from there is highly variable.
    Good luck.

Never seen a cardiologist in the context of an appointment, but there's a cardiologist at the hospital where I work who's a very chummy, chatty and at times flirtatious wiseass. I imagine appointments with him are interesting, to say the least.

Sounds like you are doing the right thing. Good on you and your wife.

Are you aware of the research that shows that married men live on average years longer than unmarried men?
    Now do you understand why?:)

  7. Good call ralphie, get it checked out.

    Good luck.

Not dumb at all. Fear of the unknown is real.

I don't think you have anything to fear about the appointment itself; they won't hurt you. What you fear is what they may tell you.

And once they tell you, all the millions of possibilities will be narrowed down. Even getting bad news will probably be better than whatever you fear they will tell you. And once you know, you can make plans and take action.

  12. Getting the news allows you to stop it now, whatever it is. That's positive.

I know how the nerves can get before these kinds of things. Try sitting quietly and breathing deeply for two or three minutes.

Breathe in fully and naturally, hold it for a few seconds, and then let it out slowly. It can work wonders if you do it long enough.

Try doing this without distractions such as TV or the Internet. All it takes is a few minutes.

I know I myself am guilty of letting stress and distractions lead me to shallow and short breathing.

thanks, ill try that in a few.

  20. ralphie, most likely you won't hear anything today. Your cardiologist will set you up for some tests. Pretty much like Baraka_Guru experienced, I had the same happen to me. No reason to get all nervous for this visit.
