I have always had an issue getting up in the morning. But here in the last year or so when my alarm goes off in the morning I keep hitting the snooze button until eventually i say oh shit I gotta go. It seems as if no matter what time I go to bed I still can't get up. But here's the kicker... if I set it for a sat am and have somewhere to go I only hit the snooze button once and I am up. I don't really know what the problem is but is starting to annoy the shit out of my wife. I know I have sleep apnea but I do not use a machine but I was told about 5 years ago that I had sleep apnea I don't know what the problem is but I just can't get the hell up in the morning. Any ideas or suggestions or do you suffer from the same problem if you don't anymore what did you do to fix it

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

It is important to address your sleep apnea, both for your overall health and to help you feel alert and well rested in the morning.

    This.

Sleep apnea is nothing to mess around with. Lots of guys in their 30s, 40s, and 50s never wake up one day because of it. My dad and several of my friends have had to get machines. They all hated them at first, but once they found the proper mask, pressure, and got used to it, they feel INCREDIBLY better. Not to mention the massively reduced chance of heart attack, an accident from fatigue, and the fact that it makes it easier to lose weight.

What happens if you try and sleep as long as you can? If you have nothing to get up for that day, and no interruptions can you wake up at noon or so?

It does kind of sound like your body isn't getting the right type of sleep and that it is trying to have you get more. Or you are just out of sync with the time zone, even if you haven't traveled That is my problem. I can barely wake up before 8am on the east coast, but can easily wake up at 6am on the west coast.

Fix the sleep apnea thing too. Or find out if you snore and can't fall into the REM phase of your sleep cycle...

I can't stress the sleep apnea enough - if you are not getting restful sleep, that's going to make anything difficult.

I used to have a sleep apnea machine and slept with it and it seems to work but I didn't have it for long maybe 2 months and then my insurance company told me I had to pay for it and it was like a thousand dollars and I don't have a thousand dollars laying around so I gave it back but that's been quite a few years ago

I have apnea. Always been a poor sleeper. I get up 2-3 times a night every night. But when the alarm goes off I get out of bed. Because I have to.

Found the bedamned PAP machine and I just don't get along. I mean, outside of the fact that I was nailed in one place with this horrible mask over my face and unable to move, hold my Lady, change my position when the Restless Leg thing acted up . . . I also felt claustrophobic. Trapped. Had trouble breathing with air pressure constantly pushing at me. Libido absolute zero. Adjustment of air pressure wasn't the issue, the issue was the existence of the mask on my face in the first place. I actually would lie there with tears in my eyes trying to sleep. For hours. Never ever felt better from using it. It was a month-long nightmare. Guess I'm one of those folks who just can't abide the bedamned things. Gave the PAP machine about 4 weeks then said fuck it. I would leave my Lady before wearing it again. That is saying a lot.
Instead, I went to an ENT surgeon guy and got my uvula burned off, and my sinus turbinates realigned. Unpleasant and uncomfortable, but if it is the only way to make my Lady happy while remaining sane myself, then I do it. Post surgery (had it done last summer) I'm told my snoring is definitely better and the apnea is no longer a concern to my Lady. Which is a good thing. She regularly informs me that whenever I demonstrate consistent, significant cognitive impairment it's a deal-breaker. She was attracted to me solely because of my mind, and if that goes . . .

Guess I'm saying if the cost is an issue and you can convince the powers that be that the PAP machine is unworkable, and surgery would be covered - then investigate it as an option.

Many years ago I had my tonsils and adenoids out, and some sinus scar tissue cleaned up at the same time. I didn't have sleep apnea, but I was/am at risk because my dad has it and I have a thick neck (even when I lose a few pounds). The doctor suggested my uvula be taken off at the same time, so I did. No sleep apnea and minimal snoring, so I guess it worked.

FWIW, I've heard many people say they hated the CPAP machine. Most didn't realize that there is a massive variety of masks available, of many different styles. Most I know had to go through 2-3 different masks before finding one that worked for them. Talk to your doctor and the sleep study tech about what your options are if you are in that situation.

    Uvula?????
I have my tonsils and adenoids and all that good stuff. But I do snore like a mother fucker. My wife swears the neighborhood can hear me.
When I did use the cpap machine I did like kramus find it uncomfortable as hell.

If I go to sleep and am allowed yo sleep til I get up I'll sleep til a good 10 or 11 am. No matter what time I go to bed. But normally I get up to pee or take the dog out at 7 or so on weekends and I just stay up

Uvula = the dangly thing in the back of your throat. When your throat relaxes as you sleep, it probably blocks part of your airway. Removing it frees up space for you to breathe better.

Listen to the folks about sleep apnea. Shit's no joke.

The part that got my attention is that if you have something that you want to do on the weekends, you get up a lot easier. I used to be the same way, took forever to get out of bed for work, but if there was something that I wanted to do on the weekend, I'd get right up after as little as 3 hours of sleep. The only way I fixed the Monday- Friday issue was changing jobs. I didn't change jobs for that reason, it just worked out that when I changed jobs, I started getting right up for the new one, and after almost 3 years, I still do. Guess I really dreaded going to work at my last job.

I'm thankful for my programmable coffeemaker. Beyond addressing the sleep apnea, I really recommend it as a powerful getting-out-of-bed tool. I don't like getting out of bed at 5:30am, but the thought that there is a pot of coffee waiting for me makes it much more tolerable.

    Coffee is my best friend...
What gets me is I can go to bed at 1 or 2 in the morning and get up at 4 or 5 to go hunting.
I just hated the sleep study test that was pain

Another option is a mouthpiece, or oral appliance, that can help to open your airway during sleep. Your doctor can refer you to an orthodontist to get one custom fit for you, and it might be more affordable or covered completely by your insurance.

My dad had to have his adenoids, tonsils, and uvula removed and part of his palate shaved off, his was so bad. Hubs uses flonase and breathe right strips and they work reasonably well. He still scares the crap out of me when he stops breathing at night. Man, I'm going to miss even that stuff.
