    What in your favourite monster?
    (most creepy/most impressive/real/fictional)

    Mine is probably the Wendigo.

I think there is something quite frightening in the complete indifference of nature, and the Wendigo "personifies" this wild and careless violence.

I don't know, does Dracula qualify as a monster?
Because that book scared the living shit out of me.

I read the Bram Stoker book and found it kind of weak to be honest.

Its interesting now how there is this shift in the vampire again in pop culture

Already he has moved from an abomination, a corpse given some kind of sick mockery of life / to some dark romantic force or rape fantasy / to a sparkling crybaby who instead of a crawling and sick contagion is a slightly intense college kid stalking a high school girl

I'm only about a quarter of the way through 'Dracula' so far. He's kinda creepy so far. But Kurt Barlow. Now there's one disturbing cat. Every time I read 'Salem's Lot, I have kind of a hard time turning out the lights at bed time or walking near the windows.

Keeping with King, Randall Flagg (or the Man in Black, depending on what book you're reading) is one hell of a villain, too.

I would have to go with the Frankenstein monster, big, powerful and completely misunderstood.

The Blob was my favorite, so scary when I was a very young age.

It came out in 1958 with the sexy Steve McQueen. Filmed not to far from where I live.

    Werewolves, zombies, vampires!

I'm something of a monster movie / horror flick maniac and have a pretty extensive knowledge of said creatures.

My favorite era has to be the 1980s. We had it all.

Surreptitious Aliens: The covert morphing virus in Carpenter's The Thing (1982) is one of my favorites. Then you've got the infamous Xenomorph from the Cameron Alien line. The Hunter from Predator versus Schwarzenegger never ceases to impress.

Unstoppable Slashers: Freddy Kreuger from A Nightmare on Elmstreet. Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th. Michael Meyers from Halloween.

    ...

Billy Zane's evil character from the Tales from the Crypt feature length Demon Knight also tickles me in all the right ways for a goofy horror bad guy.

Another vote for Frankenstein's monster. You know, the literary (and literate) one.

As far as monsters that scare me, I gotta say the undead. All of them:
    • ghosts (e.g., the Headless Horseman)
    • wights (e.g., the creations of the White Walkers in A Song of Ice and Fire)
    • wraiths (e.g., the Nazgûl in The Lord of the Rings)
    • vampires (think John Carpenter or The Lost Boys, not Twilight)
    • zombies (e.g., the zombies in The Walking Dead, 28 Days Later, and a bunch of classics, natch)
    • all of the above (e.g., in a whole bunch of RPGs and other video games I've played)
What's scary about these things is the idea of the supernatural and things from "beyond the grave." They're scary because they exist beyond the realm of the living and therefore hate us and want to destroy us and will do it with powers beyond our comprehension...that sort of thing.

Also, after recently rereading The Hobbit, I can't get the idea of the dragon out of my head. It's what first drew me to Dungeons & Dragon and it's what keeps me interested in fantasy, folklore, and mythology.

Dragons have so much variation in terms of their look, their intelligence, their capabilities, their demeanour, etc., that it's a whole world of interest to me.

I also like the idea of dragons in a metaphorical sense. "Slaying dragons" can refer to facing fears or overcoming hardships.

    Also: Falcor.

    C'mon, he's a fucking luck dragon.

Wait..what.. Falcor was a dragon? I thought he was a snake with the head of a puppy. ;)

Just kidding. I can't wait to see what they do with 'Smaug' Jackson did a great job of bringing the Balrog to life.

LOTR got me interested in AD&D, but it was Drizzit that got me hooked. which brings me to my next fav monsters..Orcs..fierce fighting machines whose skills and strength is enough to give any player the chills and thrills.

What the fuck? Falcor isn't a dragon.

Dragons are lizards. It's a rule, right?

    ...

I really wish the green version of orcs was the only version.

Tolkien orcs aren't nearly as cool as the plant spore variety.

Going with the with fictional literary type but far too realistic and plausible for comfort - Dr. Hannibal Lector.
In the vampire genre, have to go with the portrayal of them in that superb CBS series Forever Knight. Badass creatures that can fly, are impervious to bullets and all that but they do have not the f'ing stupid granite skin in Twilight and thus vulnerable to a wooden stake in the heart. They also have zero tolerance for ultraviolet rays and start smoking instantly on contact as shown more than once during the series run. The main "villian" vampires (Nicholaus Knight does not truly count as he not killed a human in over a century and drinks cows blood for 99.9% of the series run) would have killed Bella and her dad as a light snack, and killed Edward just 'cause without any hesitation.

Falcor maintains some reptilian features. He has scales. He just happens to have hair as well.

Both scales and hair are made from keratin. They're totally related. Think of Luck Dragons as a cross between a reptile and a dog.
