I'm more of a hacker than a golfer, but I do enjoy it. Fortunately I have a job that usually entails a mix of charity outings and customer entertainment involving golf.

Tomorrow I get to golf what is supposed to be a really cool course for the first time, TPC Deere Run in Silvis, IL. It's the course where the PGA holds the John Deere Classic every year. :)

How many golfers do we have here? Where do you play? Are you any good? :p

I golf a fair amount, and I play a lot of client golf too. I suck and routinely shoot in the high 90's, low 100's. That said, I've played some great golf courses - Pebble Beach, Spyglass, TPC Sawgrass, Half Moon Bay, Whistling Straights....

I don't have a home course, but there may be a time down the road where I join a country club. We'll see.

bogey golfer here, but i had a run of low 80s during july...

my home course is http://www.beldenhillgolf.com/Home_Page.html and i can be found there almost every day from the end of may until the end of september...

when i'm in florida, i golf mostly in pasco county, quota game at meadow oaks on saturdays and quota game at timber greens on sundays, both including skins and pins...

i've been know to hit some of the bigger courses on occasion but i find i'm more comfortable with my game if i confine it to one or two courses...

Tried golfing once. I think I was hitting about 102 by the 3rd hole. Gave the clubs back and went home. Never bothered with the game again.

I took lessons in the spring. I would like to continue with it. I suck really bad at the moment though - I'm 6'6" and use hand me down clubs from a neighbor. They are far too short for me. Need to invest some money in a custom length set.

My two ways of measuring success at golf:

    1) I swung, and the ball moved - success
    2) I swung, and the ball moved further than the 14" strip of grass that went with it - major success

I am an ass end golfer, but I still love it. I have a course about 5 minutes from my house called Apple Mountain that I play at regularly. It ain't cheap, but it is beautiful. I also try to get up to Boyne Mountain once a year, but those courses are wasted on a duffer like me. I was on the winning team for our annual friends and family scrammble this year, and won a few prizes for closest to the pin and closest in 2. Unfortunately because of our winters here, it always seems like I have to relearn how to play every summer, and I don't get back to my best golf until the season is almost over.

Cool! You were less then 5 miles from my house straight north on River Rd, which is the road the resort sits on.
I like the course alot, but man I hate walking it. Its so spread out its like a hiking expedition in between holes.

What did you end up shooting there? My last time out I finally got it under 100, but not by much.

I think I broke 100, but not by much. I know I lost money.

My dad bought me juvenile golf clubs many years but it has been ages since I did more than goofy golf/putting. I have to buy/rent left handed clubs and that expense is really low on my list of priorities these days.

hope to get out this afternoon...

for the past week and a half, it's been tough what with flooding, excessive rainfall, and now unseasonal frost...

but i'll be in florida in a couple of weeks, so all is good...

Craigslist, garage sales, or Play It Again Sports are your friends. You could probably pick up a set for barely more than a single rental charge.

I picked up a back-up set (for buddies with no clubs, or friends visiting who don't want to haul their clubs), with bag, full set of irons, 3 and 5 woods, driver, and putter for $10 at a garage sale two years ago. They are about a 20 year old set of Ram golf clubs, so they aren't elite or the latest technology, but they are very serviceable for a hacker.

that sounds right. My bigger holdup is probably lack of motivation for the sport but finding the proper clubs for a good deal would be the essential first step for me.
