And a lovely shot of mom and daughter.

Anyone who tans to that extreme has to be completely crazy. If we are going to take a beach vacation in the winter or spring, I'll tan a few times just so I don't burn on the beach the first couple of days. Other than that, I never do. Occasionally I'll see women who are so burnt they are almost orangish brown, or ones who are 40-50 but look 25 years older because their skin is leathery. I just don't get the attraction of having more than a moderate tan, unless it's to show off that you just got back from Cancun or something.

I tan easily, and like having a natural tan in the summer. But unless I'm at the beach I never lay out for a tan, it just comes through normal activity outside like mowing the yard or golfing. I can see people wanting a tan to a small degree despite the skin cancer risks, but you are right, anyone who would purposefully do that (tan to that extreme, whether she let her daughter tan or not) has have a screw loose.

Yikes. Mom needs some serious help.
This story is a bit one sided. Wish they spoke with the teacher, police and/or salon workers. As it reads now, it seems like a bunch of knee jerk reactions from the teacher and the police.

I don't understand the appeal of tanning. I prefer to be pale. If I do have to be outside for extended periods of time, I slather on the sunscreen.

Different articles are reporting different things about the severity of the girl's burns. Clearly, they were bad enough to cause the teacher concern, and as a mandatory reporter, a teacher is REQUIRED BY LAW to report any suspicion of child abuse or neglect. Knee jerk or not, the teacher did the right thing.

Oh, Jesus Christ on a deranged donkey! That woman is scary looking!
I thought for a second the child was stroking a mahogany bust.

Her daughter looks like she would tan from the lights of a microwave. I doubt she took her into the booth.

Hey, Plan9, if you're going to accuse folks of stereotyping, at least get the stereotypes right. New Jersey Tan is orange. This lady's obviously gone full Geoge Hamilton.

I am not sure whether she should have been arrested. It seems more important that the child is temporarily made safe until social workers can assess properly how much of a risk she is to her children's safety.

If it is the case that the kid is just somewhere safe while she is erm.. doing that to herself... and that can be proved quickly by a home visit, there is no need to lock anyone up or traumatise the kid... but the mother needs help.

We as a society (and I include the UK and the US) really need to try harder to avoid putting people into the criminal justice system when they really need medical/pyschological help.

This is indeed a great day. I agree with SF. Let there be a celebration.

Very well, I will continue to drink this pale ale in your honor sir. I'm feeling the need to kick up a comment about mastercheffing something up, but I'm afraid it would only be controversial. Regardless, I do agree with the sentiment above. Unless there is real proof of child abuse, I think you need to be careful about actually giving someone a record over an accusation that as far as I can tell is unfounded....

Someone showed me this briefly while I was at work.
I thought they were joking about the woman's picture. Photoshopped perhaps.
    Apparently not.
Unbelievable if that photo is real.

Yes, Mom's got issues but I can't believe they arrested her for child endangerment based on a comment her very young daughter made and a teacher overheard. The daughter did not say she went and got tanned herself only that she went tanning with her mother. Based on her comment, several different scenarios can be imagined, yet only one was considered and an arrest was made. I suspect conclusions were jumped to based on the fact that the child had a bit of a sunburn - not surprising -it's been hot and sunny in NJ and the child is fair skinned - and that her mother was a chronic and compulsive tanner.

If any state with a law restricting minors from getting under tanning lamps is broken, it's the salon owners who are held responsible. They are the ones the laws were designed for. If they don't enforce it they risk arrest, loss of license and civil lawsuits. Children are not even allowed in the tanning room with their parents as they can be exposed to the UV rays just by being in the same room.

If this happened at all, how did this kid get by the staff of the salon? If they let her join her mother in the tanning room, why haven't the salon owners been arrested? Were they asked about the incident as part of the investigation, prior to the arrest? Did authorities ask the child what she meant when she said she went tanning with her mother? I understand that law enforcement is not keen on speaking to children in an investigation but I have no doubt that child protective services was involved in this and their role would absolutely include speaking with the child.

So what was this arrest based on? An innocent comment by a child, overheard by a teacher who may have already held a less than kind opinion of the child's mother?

If so, I'd be fucking suing....somebody.

If there's evidence that this mother even took her daughter into the tanning room with her, she deserves the charge. She may also need help psychologically but that's a separate matter having nothing to do with the fact that she knowingly exposed her fair-skinned ginger daughter to UV tanning bed rays. And then there's the salon owners and staff on duty when it happened, if it happened. I'd be looking to see an arrest made there or at least a revocation of their operating license.

The story is missing a lot of detail, much of which you questioned. I only hope the police answered those questions before going so far as to make an arrest.

Yep. I think police may have jumped to conclusions. Mom is tan. Ergo, child with sunburn went tanning with mom. The child does not look very sunburned at all.

It does seem like an overreaction but on the other hand.. look at the mother. If you as a teacher were well aware of the mother's appearance it would be pretty easy to jump to the conclusion that the woman is an obsessed tanner and perhaps wanted the little one to join in on her addiction.

Pretty easy? Good thing she's not a crack addict, eh?

Sorry, but however I might judge the less than reasonable personal behavior of a parent, I don't think I've ever jumped to a conclusion that the parent wanted their kindergarten aged child to join them in it. I was being kind in saying the teacher may have jumped. I actually think it required quite a leap. Or it would for me, at least. I really hope the teacher at least questioned the child for some confirmation before running to the authorities with her conclusion. My guess is, she probably didn't.

I guess we need to start profiling excessive tanners on the assumption that they're child abusers.
