Seriously, what is wrong with people? These were 8 year olds. *facepalm*

Teenagers would find the questions funny but some third graders would be frightened.
I can see where the teacher MAY be coming from and should have been given a warning and be watched closely for awhile, not fired.

Yeah, to clarify, I don't think he should necessarily be fired for it. I think it was in horrible taste considering the ages of the kids though.

  6. I know some 8 year old boys that would think the leach problems were cool. Maybe even some 8 year old girls.

The dead marble kid and smoking ones weren't cool though.

some teachers maybe need to be taught to understand the concept of 'situational awareness...'

  8. We homeschooled our kids. We encourage folks considering homeschooling. I've never encountered HomeschoolingParadise.com and am glad of it. The link won't even respond, right now.
I'm in favor of using an entertaining format, but it has to be age-appropriate. I don't think there's any age for which these examples would appropriate, though. That teacher needs to learn something his/herself.

...but the talk of bloodsuckers and Washington D.C. is so appropriate.

This is just....ridiculous. Both the story and the moron who wrote it.

I dont know... I can kind of see why they are inappropriate, but the intention is obviously to catch the kids attention rather than condition them to horrific violence. I am not sure that someone needed to lose their job over it.

I would agree that some of these are not really suitable (and I think there were some about roasting people in ovens which are even less so) but at the same time this is not going to cause real trauma or emotional harm to the kids.

I'm far more concerned about the characters behind HomeschoolingParadise.com. Morbid seems a rather mild adjective, not to mention that the questions seem to be so biologically impossible that the kids generalising the data to other areas are going to have some really bad misconceptions about the quantity of blood in a human body or the capacity of the human stomach among other things.

Seems to be a fairly un-thoughtful attempt at keeping the attention of the kids. I don't think there was any malice to it. Just trying to appeal to the Zombified, XBox wargame playing kids... Keeping hip and cool, you know

This is unintentionally hilarious. I can't stop laughing at this.

And yet when I'm intentionally funny, nobody notices. I'm beginning to suspect I need a personality make-over.

I don't see anything hugely wrong with the blood sucking questions (apart from the obvious blood volume and skin space issues). I think my 8 yo would think they are funny. Digesting marbles and smoking? yep, those are inappropriate.

Firing the teacher? that's a bit harsh really.

This should have resulted in a disciplinary action but not a firing (unless it was a repeat offense).

i think that getting rid of these math problems would be like getting rid of the cookie monster. no shit eating marbles by the thousands and smoking more than Fly in the 3rd grade is bad for you. reminding these kids of that isn't bad in the slightest.
