Dads uncle picked it up while he was over there. This is a bayonette right?

pictures are either infinitely large or on an infinitely slow server - havent been able to load for almost 15 minutes now....

so if its a bayonette, Ill take your word for it...

[edit] oh there it is,

doesnt really look like a bayonette to me as it doesnt have the ring-mount that was used on rifles of that era, it looks like a bowie knife that was issued to all soldiers at the time, although an old timer would know better than I. Still a really nice piece though, thanks for sharing![/edit]

That's a Hitler Youth knife; I have one in my own collection. The swastika in the red and white field, on the hilt, indicates that it was from a unit attatched to a Waffen SS brigade. Prolly be worth quite a bit if you cleaned the blade up.

How do I go about cleaning it up? Steel polish?

Also, I told him about it and he already knew, uncle got two of them off of youths during the heat of things and said that they're tarnished from blood.

Yup, Hitler youth knife.

I wouldn't touch it before consulting an antiques dealer specializing in Nazi memorabilia first.

It is way too easy to try to "fix" or "clean" an antique only to drastically reduce it's value.

This is a said tale that many a dealer will tell you.

That being said, if it were mine I would put a light coat of sewing machine oil on the blade with a light cloth to keep it from rusting any further.

Lebell hit it right on the nose. Consult an antique/militaria dealer or broker before you do anything to it. At most, the rust will need to be removed...anything more would lower its collector value.

probably never- seeing as how the original owner probably caught a bullet first-

definately do not try to clean it without the help of an expert- once you do though I recomend a product called reniassance wax- its great for protecting bladed impliments as it is a micro crystaline wax and does not evaporate.

Don't clean it, don't screw with it. Give it some light oiling on the blade and exposed metal surfaces and find a dealer that trades in old knives and weapons. If you cannot find one, ask a local gun shop owner.
