1. Pay very close attention to the safety briefing.

2. If there isn't a safety briefing, leave and go somewhere else.

3. Have fun.

Dont let your friends stand down range and throw your ex-girlfriends teddybear up in the air for target practice.

Pay very close attention to the range being "hot" or "safe". Make sure everyone agrees to "safe" before walking downrange to collect and rehang silhouettes. Every range I've ever been to has been an eye contact, yes we are agreed, it is now officially safe large deal. Don't be the guy that strolls downrange when it's still hot. We hate that guy.

From personal experience, don't put your face too close to the receiver (or scope, if equipped). When I was 6, my dad took me on my first shooting excursion. Went to the range to shoot an old .410 single shot. Being so young, I couldn't put the stock against my shoulder, so I tucked it up under my underarm. I cocked the hammer, looked down the barrel to aim, squeezed the trigger and . . . BANG! The hammer came up and sliced a huge gash above my eye! Hurt like hell!

Moral of the story- Keep your face a good distance away from the receiver. Other than that, just be safe and have fun!

In addition to the above posts:

Listen to every single word the Range Officer says. Also, relax. Most people get too tense, nervous, and excited, and end up doing something foolish. Clear your mind, let your muscles relax, and realize that even though the tools you're playing with are deadly, they still only do what you tell them to. Finally, recoil isn't nearly as bad as one would imagine it to be.

Have fun, and hopefully your introduction to a particularly expensive, however, rewarding hobby, goes well.

Just relax, have fun, and stay concious of yourself and everything that is going on around you. If other people at the range are being stupid, leave. You dont wanna be around when they fuck up.

I have been to ranges that do not have a safety briefing but do have posted rules and are very good ranges.

Be Polite if the people around you are not being polite, either leave or pay very close attention.
