Need a New Rig
I've been going to these wannabe cool guy shooting schools recently. Very AR and Glock of me... I know, but I suck at golf and already have camo pants.
After having issues with 'em not rolling out during drills due to "handling deformities," I finally scrapped all of my craptacular alum GI mags and upgraded to 30-shot window'd Pmags with ranger plates. Decent price off Botac.com. After using these fabulous plastic mags at a class... I'm convinced they're pretty darn nifty. They're strong, drop out easily, and I haven't had any mag malfunctions since the switch (although I rarely have them anyway). So now I have like a dozen PMags sitting on my bed next to my ratfuck MOLLE rig. Turns out they don't fit in the pouches. Too tall for the pouch lids to close and, really, GEN 2 MOLLE stuff is about as cool as a Hulk Hogan lunch box would be in high school today. I need something newerish but I don't wanna drop a zillion bucks. These pouches are kinda what I want, but I think over-the-baseplate elastic is probably safer for crawling around. I need a new rig to run like 6 mags, with decent retention, for my silly He-Man shooting sports. I prefer naked MOLLE to stuff with fixed pouches. I like racks better than vests. This will be second line gear, going above and over top of a belt / suspenders that carries my Glock holster / 9mm mags / Leatherman / compass / blowout kit / dump pouch. Any recommendations? Thoughts? What can I ziptie / 550 together? |
I was hoping the HSLD bearded-manly men would come in and enlighten us, but I guess they're busy. Have you tried posting this at M4carbine.net?
|
No, because I spent all week reading their bitchfest threads on the topic. :) M4, ARF, HighRoad, etc. TFP is relatively tactivirgin.
Anyway, I went to LAPoliceGear and discovered a bunch of crap that was on sale... so now I'm going to have another ratfucked rig. It'll be better than the last one, at least. |
I have an AR and I know how to use it, but I think that's the end of my knowledge. I have absolutely no idea what you were / are asking for, heh..

I have a Diamondback plate carrier thats working for me. It goes on fast and is infinitely adjustable.
Its a pretty basic set up: Triple pistol mag pouch Flashlight pouch Knife 3 double m4 mag pouches Israeli tourniquet rubber banded to my left kidney area On my belt I have a Serpa holster on a drop platform, and a stuff sack. Will post pics this afternoon. |
i need a new lbv i lost mine somehow coming back from deployment....so i am in the market myself but, i think i will just wait till next year and let work pay for it

I am a big fan of this one from Diamond Back Tactical: BattleLab LV3-Low Vis Rack With Molle
It is ultra simple, very slim, and you have MOLLE on the outside, the mag pouches are single mag pouches so the whole rack stays slim enough for you to add a radio, etc. on top of them. I got a lot of use out of mine when I needed to keep the bulk-down. The drawback is that the system is not very good for gaming...it is a little slow compared to a belt-worn kydex mag pouch and getting the magazines back in the rack can be a two-hand job. http://www.diamondbacktactical.com/i...LPF20-2LV3.jpg |
Thanks for all the suggestions.
... I thought about a plate carrier but I like to keep my armor and my kit separated in case I have to ditch one or the other quickly. It proved to be a useful system in country when I had to cram my way into RG31s, bomb suits, etc. I had my fireteam use their MOLLE vests over their IBAs so they could trade weapons and related kits quickly, while maintaining their armor. I had a 240 setup, a 203 setup, a 249 setup, etc... the guns and vests could easily be switched between guys with different body types. We never actually shot at anybody, so I'll never know if it made any sense to do it that way. Yeah, I'm not worried about being completely gameboy out there at these "tactical" schools. Not my style. I wouldn't use a rig that I couldn't jump or Nasty Nick with confidence. A real fighting rig isn't attached to your pants, anyway. I still like to keep my kit all "real world" even though I'm not in it anymore, being a civvie college student, only encountering the amount of danger I can summon via a fewBud Lights with my rowdy karate friends. Turns out Kydex mag pouches on a riggers belt is stupid. Especially for all these fatbodies supposedly training to be PSD jokers. Bleh. I'm gonna be using a 5.11 chest rig and Maxpedition double shingles with MOLLE on the front, double-stacked. 8 mags. Shingles, as was said above, are a bitch to put the mags back into... but that's okay... I've got a dump pouch (I never put empty mags back in the chest rig) and I won't be reloading mags under stress if I've got a dozen of them on my person, split between the rig and assault pack. 1st line gear will have the rest of my kit and be hanging, cowboy style, on my hips via modded LC2 suspenders. Still need to get a Kydex holster for my Glock 34, I've been using my old Bianchi M12 flap holster from army-land. ... I'd like to get a non-armored MOLLE "battle belt" thingie with suspenders; they're sweet, but they're expensive. I like the idea of having a layered system. It's proven to be really useful. Wish I'd used it while deployed. Also kinda sad that I'm a better shot now than I was when I was actually pointing a M4 at toothless Afghans. ... Any other gear suggestions from you guys that do IDPA / Three Gun / Cool Guy shooting schools? |
My thoughts: Hulk Hogan will never go out of style. Not with twenty-four inch pythons to do the talking, anyway.
Long live Hulk! (grats on the rig ;) Also: PICS!) |
You could try OPSGEAR.com and see if you like anything there. As for break away you said it best, you will have to rig something up yourself. Not to many choices out there. Molle or A.L.I.C.E gear. I have a 5.11 tactical vest. It's ok but nothing to write home about. I'm sure your aware of US Cavalry.com, Unclesamsoutfitter.com. I've looked around for years and still improvise my on gear. US Cavalry is a bit on the spendy side mainly because they only sell the newest thing on the market. For that matter I would almost say join an art an craft group and design your own system, make it and market it. Get rich quick. LOL Good luck.

PICS! =D

Okay, shit-shit... I just got back from vacation and I'm balls deep in school.
I'll set up my rig and have one of my bros take a picture of the mess. ... For those of you that skipped to the response part without reading, I'm using a 5.11 chest rig w/ Maxpedition slot pouches. |
and here I thought I was going to recommend a truck to someone.
lol.. silly me. |
Okay, some pictures:
Setup is a 4x2 M4 chest rig using 2x1 Maxpedition open top shingles. 8 mag: 4 across, 2 deep. Platform is 5.11 mesh panel chest rig. I ditched the elastic shockcord that chokes the tops of the shingles. Turns out the pouches are lined with grippy panels on the outward facing side and the PMags don't even budge when I'm doing pushups on my head. USGI mags are easier to remove and may benefit from the extra tension. As you can see in the pictures below, I had to add my own 1.5" triglides to keep the rig tight. They design these things for big boys (either muscle or lard) and I'm definitely not one. The additional triglides keep the torso strap tails tight and maintain the snug adjustment of the rig on my scrawny chest. Also: If you want a good hand and finger workout... just assemble this rig as fast as you can. Weaving the 16 MOLLE tails through both the chest rig and pouches kicked my ass. I like the design and quality of Maxpedition pouches, but their highly adjustable attachment method leaves a lot to be desired. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a13.../CrompRig1.jpg I had to ziptie the back two shingles and front two shingles together in the middle to prevent the rig from bending out in the middle. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a13.../CrompRig2.jpg I haven't had a chance to use this $100 setup on the range yet, but I'd imagine it'll be just as good as something far more expensive. I've been doing drills with it in the garage and it seems to be fine as long as I keep my elbows tight while drawing mags. It's lightweight and idiot proof to use. Now I need to replace my ghetto ass 1st line belt with something that doesn't smell like Sapper Leader Course. MOLLE battle belt w/ suspenders - GO! ... Any comments, thoughts, or suggestions on the chest rig or what I should do about my 1st line gear? |
McDonald's. I'm loving it.
Does open top greatly increase your reload time? Any worries as to dropping a mag after crawlin around for a day? =D |
Quote:
Open tops increase reload time at the cost of retention, but the individual one-pocket-one-mag setup with grippy innards is pretty "grood" so far. It's easy; nothing to manipulate... grab, pull, load, tug. Obvious that the rig isn't perfect for airborne ops or something I'd choose for patrolling, although I could rig up straps, 550 cord, or breakaway bands like some kind of ghetto Rambo. I think the big issue with any minimalist panel-style chest rig is that it only stays put if its tight... otherwise it flops around like a fat girl doing the 100 yard dash without a sports bra. Annoying. As long as I keep my elbows tight and jerk-draw for my next mag, the carrier doesn't pull up. The PMag loops really help out for this. I know they're total GeerQeer but that's okay with me... I'm just some douche stain that doesn't wanna get into golf. ... PM me your schedule 'til December, law school flunky. We need to go shoot - ASAP. I have no friends. |
