brain storming ~ remote hard drive - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

i was planning on buying a large hard drive, sticking it in an external drive case, hide it where i can't damage it, and run a long cable from it to my laptop in my room, for extra external storage since my laptop has some limited space.... i was also considering doing an DVD-RW drive instead for unlimited media storage....

now i have an idea of combining that idea with wireless technology, soo i wouldn't need the cord, the drive would just be there always... is there anyway i can use wireless technology to connect to that remote drive in a external case? would it be worth it? fast enough? or would i just be better off in everyway to stick with a cable

i know IR technology would let you set your computer down next to a printer and connect rather than using a USB drive..... here's a page of random IR products like that... http://www.actisys.com/IrDAProd.html#IR100M

It would work in theory.

I don't know how you'd host it.

I don't know of any wireless technology that does NAS or SAN. But I'll bet that someone out there has it.

I think that there are hard drives that you can hook up directly to a router through ethernet. So, if you have a wireless router to get your internet, you could reach that data from your laptop.

my current wireless router is making me want to smash it, once i smash it i thnk i might upgrade to that one!

Never underestimate the power and flexibility of a pile of recycled computer hardware with a ton of hard disks sitting on your network.

Even an old PII (or K6-II) with a couple IDE cards and a bunch of hard disks can serve data plenty fast.

In my case I'm planning to spend a little more cash however, and set up a full-on Linux fileserver. Opteron processor, 2GB RAM, 2 4-port SATA cards, 8 250GB SATA hard drives in a software RAID-5 array (1.7TB) on gigabit networking. Comes out to just under $1800 (but I already have some of the hardware).

My current Linux filer is a T-bred 1700+ with 1GB PC133 and 4 160GB PATA disks in a software RAID-5 (430GB). Feels quite small now in a world of 500GB IDE drives...it's been 100% full now for almost a year...just working on that $1800....

Yeah, an old machine with an IDE WiFi card would work fine. You don't need a lot of grunt for a fileserver. I recommend Linux and Samba. That's what I'm using for my fileserving in my home network--an antique machine running a very minimal Gentoo with Samba. It lives by my desk here, but I could just as easily put it elsewhere.

You could also get one of those swank Shuttle small-form-factor machines and stick it under the shoes in your closet.

Haha, that would be tight. I'm working on crafting up a fileserver myself. I've already got a kickin' Cyrix 250mhz webserver running Windows XP + Apache. It's easy for me to update my webpage and upload files, but it's evidently too easy and is probably very insecure (windows file sharing = not best idea ever, hell, my family can get in and f with it).

I'm considering switching to Linux, or at the least, some version of Windows Server ..... anything that will allow me to configure access based on user logons of OTHER computers. Otherwise, if anyone has suggestions on how to do this WITHOUT XP server, please inform me

Linux will take some time but it will certainly be more secure and obviously more efficient on this machine. ATM in order to tweak the machine I connect through VNC, but I've got a KVM switch now and I'll have to hook that up at some point.

My main question is - If i made a linux file/webserver, how would I allow everyone on my home network (all running windows) to connect to it?
