quick speaker setup question
 

So we're going to be having a party and I want to have more than my 2.1s driving the music in one area.

Question is, is it plausable to split the 1/8" connection and run that wiring in two directions comin from the laptop with the music on it to two separate 2.1 speaker setups? will there be a loss in quality? note that both sets of speakers are power amplified.

When you say split, do you mean split the connection into left & right? Or split a part of each one and take from both the left and right to each speaker set? And are you planning on splitting them yourself manually or just using something like this:

In terms of loss in quality, it shouldn't be a big deal if both sets are power-amplified. While you will have a decrease in signal amplitude, normally the power levels from a laptop are line-level and so should be high enough anyways.

The connector in the picture above is the exact connector I use to do what you're referring to, the "gold" platted contacts help reduce loss of signal. Since both sets are self powered my friend above is correct, you shouldn't have much loss what so ever. You can also purchase a splitter like this one from a company called Monster, slightly higher end audio equipment. I bought mine from Apple.

Yea, I guess to clarify. The output on the laptop is a 1/8" stereo line. What I plan on doing is getting a Y-adapter (so 1/8" male to 2x 1/8" female), then plugging the two sets of powered speakers each female jack. I also might be running a significant length of the 1/8" stereo cable (maybe 20feet), good idea?
