Hacking...Elevators

I won't mention why I ran into this...you can figure it out anyway. I am currently unemployed (yeah, it sucks) so I don't have access to many elevators these days. Still...I want to try this. So if anybody spends their days in and out of elevators, give this a try. All I ask for in return is a post letting me know if it works. Also, if you can remember the elevator make, post that as well!

Here's the full post.

"...So I found this info surfing the net one day and its been sitting on my computer for a long time now, forgotten about, so I thought I would post it. Now that I am posting this it will prob cause chaos to people waiting for elevators everywhere, I will not be held responsible for your actions, plus like I said, I found it on the net. hehe.

"The designers of some elevators include a hidden feature that is very handy if you're in a hurry or it's a busy time in the building (like check-out time in a hotel). While some elevators require a key, others can be put into "Express" mode by pressing the "Door Close" and "Floor" buttons at the same time. This sweeps the car to the floor of your choice and avoids stops at any other floor. This seems to work on most elevators that I have tried! Most elevators have the option for this to work, but on some of them the option is turned off by whoever runs them. This is a rather fun hack, so the next time you are on an elevator, give it a try, you have nothing to lose, And this concludes Hacking Elevators 101!"

I haven't tried it yet either... but according to I-Hacked.com Taking Advantage Of Technology - Elevator Hacking:
Quote:

I find it works the easiest on:
Otis Elevators
Dover Elevators
And Most Desert Elevators

Very nice, my lemony friend. I'll be out for most of the day tomorrow, so I hope to find some tall buildings to try this on...!

blahblah454 09-30-2005 11:53 PM

Holy cow! Please let us know how that goes. That could be a fun way to spend a free afternoon

glytch 10-03-2005 07:32 AM

I have tried this in a few Otis elevators in my town, and it works beautifully. I'm glad someone figured this out! Though I'll admit I feel bad doing it, it's still a very cool "hack".

Charlatan 10-03-2005 07:44 AM

Just don't overuse it... with great power comes great responsibility.

Piss off enough people waiting for the elevator and they will change the code.

Catdaddy33 10-03-2005 02:52 PM

Doesn't work in my building, I'm on the top floor and the look I gave the poor guy when it stopped must have been horrible, he just stood in the corner looking nervious till I got off..

I was just dissappointed...

superiorrain 10-04-2005 12:14 PM

I'd just be happy if the lifts work at my university, when one is fixed i will try it. I hold little hope, it is more likely that it will send me in to free fall and put the life out of use for another month.

Very nice, I start work at a Fidelity building, i'll be sure to try and keep you posted.

todd 10-07-2005 08:31 AM

Sweet!

Just last week I just moved into the 44th floor of the Presidential Towers here in Chicago, and am in the elevator at least 6 times on an average day. It usually isnt bad, except for during rush periods. I'll definitly have to give this a try...right now actually.

drewpy 10-07-2005 09:21 AM

tried and it seemed to work - I'll need to do it multiple times though - i.e. there may not have been anyone else waiting.

Redjake 10-07-2005 10:17 AM

tried it on the elevator in my dormitory. no luck. it made the elevator freeze until I pressed the floor button again. oh well!

DHS 10-07-2005 07:58 PM

I was in Vegas this weekend an my gf and I tried it and it seemed to work. We could also have been coincidentally lucky on those tries. I didn't try having it done when I knew someone was on a floor waiting for the elevator.

Lucifer 10-11-2005 04:57 PM

damn, the shit you learn on the TFP!

Pragma 10-12-2005 04:29 AM

Unfortunately, this doesn't work on the elevators in any of the CS buildings on campus. I thought it did, as it seemed to never stop while going between ground and four for me - and then one day it stopped and the maintenence lady rolled into the elevator with two gigantic carts of trash, trapping me in a corner. I was not pleased.

jujueye 10-16-2005 12:05 AM

Interesting. Looks to be about 50/50 now. I'd ask for brands that actually do work, but it seems like more fun if we continue trying them all. I tried it in a parking lot and....I think it worked. Again, who knows if someone was waiting or not.

biznatch 10-18-2005 03:32 PM

Freakin' Sweet!
I'm gonna try it as soon as I get a chance. Nice find!

crewsor 10-18-2005 06:26 PM

Very interesting. I must admit I tried this, but upon thinking about it you would never know if it works. You would only know if it doesn't unless you station someone on another floor to see if it stops, which I don't plan on doing. But I ride elevators almost every day and I honestly couldn't say whether this works or not based on the times the car I'm in stopped anyway.

AquaFox 10-19-2005 06:00 PM

i never said this before.... but....

DARN I WISH I WORKED TOMMOROW!!!!! soo i could try this!!! :D

there random types of elevators around, soo i'll have to go around and try them all :D

thanks!

It doesn't work in the hospitals I work in. Even on our Otis 'vators. Not even the staff ones. :( I felt like such an idiot getting in and feeling so excited about hacking an elevator and then it didn't work. Not once. I guess it's maybe a safety precaution. But, dang, man. I hate heights so I'll rarely get into a building over three floors other than at work... But I'll give it a shot. And pass it on to the IT guys at BCBS who do stupid things like re-creating the SuperBall prank from one of those video sites. They'll figure out if it works. Even if it takes weeks. Big dorks.

todd 10-19-2005 06:59 PM

It hasn't been working in the apartments I live in in Chicago. I have no idea what kind of elevator it is, though. There is no markings on it other than the "certified elevator" certificate which I haven't had the change to read very well. I thought it was working at first, but turned out to just be a bunch of coincidences I guess. But i'll keep trying.

Pragma 10-19-2005 07:59 PM

I'd post the elevator type from my building at work on campus, but the only thing it says is "Certificates are kept in maintenance building (003)." -- so kind of out of luck on that one. And as I said above, doesn't work :(

jujueye 10-23-2005 03:44 PM

Oh, you might check the door area as you enter/exit. It is usually stamped on the metal like this:

Pragma 10-23-2005 04:03 PM

ThyssenKrupp makes the elevators in the computer science building where I work.

Jakes 10-27-2005 11:15 AM

yea i read that article a while ago and it seems to work in only half the elevators im in

VarsityDrinking 10-28-2005 07:17 AM

I've got no "door close" button in my building. But when I press the "door open" and "floor" button, I'm swiftly taken to the floor I was on. Interesting.

Interesting....Very nice! Does the door close as you are doing that, or does it open and wait for someone else? Just curious. I'll add this into my testing routine...

Umm....I think that was a joke. He meant that when he presses the door open button, the door opens.

jujueye 11-20-2005 11:42 PM

Thank you. I did not read it carefully enough...good lord...LOL
