Possible AIM scam
Ok, today my ex-girlfriend tried to get me to accept a file she had gotten from her roommate, who had gotten it from a friend, who had gotten it from a friend, and so on and so forth.
Basically she said that on Oct. 9 AIM was going to start charging for it's services and that this file would prevent me from losing my account and having to pay for a new one. I checked the AIM site and they have nothing posted about any such change. This stank of some type of scam to me. Either a virus or some program to allow a hacker easy access to your computer. So I was going to check with you good folks here on the TFP to see if any of you have heard of it, to see if it is what she says it is, or if she's likely to find herself a few thousand in debt. |
I haven't seen it, but thanks for the heads up. I've been hit by aim viruses before by unsuspecting people. I don't click links from them very often anymore. Only when I'm expecting something.

Sounds like bullshit to me. There no reason for AIM to start charging, seeing as how there are a plethora of other IM clients that are offering their services for free.
|
Didn't make any sense to me either. I mean, why would they provide a legitimate way to avoid the charge anyway, if they were to start charging? Which means that this had to have been created by someone outside of AIM, which just tells me again and again: Bad Program.

its not true, nor will it ever be, it wasn't true over 6-7 years ago when these things first starting showing up. It's gullible and stupid people that make scammers and such succesful, use a little common sense and everything will be fine.

You know its a scam if u go to the AIM website and don't see anything on there. If AIM was to start charging, they wouldn't inform people by chain letters or word of mouth.

Tons of viruses and trojans spread through AIM. My foolish brother got one on the family computer, which I removed in about thirty seconds (end process, delete .exe's, disable startup commands, run AVG to clean up)...
