Didn't your iPod come with a AC charger?
I take it you're charging thru the USB, right? My best guess is to eject it from itunes, but leave it plugged in to the usb. If it has the battery charging animation, it should be charging.

I had the same problem with mine... (2nd hand ipod, no charger). Luckily it accepted the car port FM transmitter thingy as a charger.
Worst case scenario is you're out $20 getting a new charger.

You have to be plugged in to a power source because just in case you don't have enough battery for whatever reason, while the firmware is being updated, if the iPod should lose power, the firmware could never be restored or accessed again, thus making your iPod useless.

If the things suggested here don't work, try poking around on http://www.ipodlounge.com. The answer is sure to be there.
