Ok I bought one back in Feb of this year, and I must say that over all I am impressed.

I was gonna build my own, but costs ran too high with having to buy a car for the family.

Amd 2.0 ghz, 40 gb hd, 256 ddr ram, came with an open agp slot (kicks HP's ass there), built in 10/100 network card, modem, 19" monitor.. 6 usb hubs 2 in front 4 in back.. lots of room(again kicks HP's ass), cdburner/dvd rom.

After hearing a ton of peps tell me beware .. I havent had a single problem with it yet.

Find it funny that they only build so many of one model before going to the next.. drives prices down and makes other companies that sell puters bring thiers down some.

and if you're going to upgrade something, you'll find out your options are very limited and it's going to give you a hard ass time.

Hey man, I did the same thing. I was gonna build my own and ran across some eMachines. I've had it about two months, and I'm in love with it. The price is right and the quality is superb. 256 MB, 60 GB Athlon processor. Highly recommended!!!

As much as i hate to admit it *shudder* E-Machines are ........OK........

for you average internet/email/surfing user. If you are a power user, i wouldnt go near it with a 10 mile pole. And trying to upgrade them? Forget it

E-Machines are able to build there rigs so cheap by doing just that, using cheaper parts. the old addage "you get what you pay for" comes to mind. They use Generic RAM, Onboard video, onboard sound, really cheap mobo's , and dont get me started on there PSU's.

Anyways....as i said if you are just an average Joe, they are ok (though id still recommend building one) But if you want to Game, photoshop, crunch numbers , etc ....the are crap

Building your own computer is the way to go for gaming or serious computing. If you dont have the IQ required to insert card A into slot B you shouldnt be gaming.

Emachines are great computers if you just want a computer to do basic things. Word, Minesweeper, Solitare, and IE. Thats about all they can do without serious problems. When it comes to upgrades/modifications/repairs You are screwed. The slots literally fall apart when the card is removed.

if you build one yourself you would get it cheaper than $588.
i build an amd 1.8ghz, asus nforce deluxe mobo, 512mb crucial ram, 80 gig hdd, ati 8500 all in wonder, 16x artec dvd, 48x liteon cdrw, Logitech elite duo and Antec 1080AMG Plus case for around $500 two month ago for a friend.

I don't like emachines cuz you can't upgrade those pcs and allmost all components are low quality. I have two friends who have emachines and both have no name hdd, memory, mini no name motherboard, special ide controller (each can only have one drive so you can only install a total of two drives instead of four) and special size power supply (you can't replace it with a standard atx power supply).

if you can't build a pc yourself pay a little more and get a dell or hp (I don't like their mini cases but they have amd cpus and great support)/compaq .

ahh but here is the kicker.. downpayment for the car ate up my taxes this year... had little for cash.. and credit for us sucks cuz we are both young and just starting out in life..

so its cash or nothing...

and where i live there is no such thing as a "puter parts store"

back in Michigan there was PC Outlet.. built a puter every year for the hell of it.. down here in suck ass louisiana.. nadda.. zip.. zilch

Anytime someone wants a prebuilt machine I recommened e machines for these reasons:
1. Low price
2. Pretty good parts in them.
3. Upgradable
4. Hardly and proprietary parts
5. And actually pretty reliable.

im on an emachine right now because im on vacation(celeron 1.7, 128mb DDR, 40gb hardrive, windows xp home) its very assy.... pretty slow and stuff... but its a nice deal.. comp, moniter, and speakers and kb+mouse ALL for $400... not too shabby if you just do internet or w/e...
and its silent to boot!
but if you are going to play ANY games, dont get it.

I've a 2 yr old emachines. 20 gig hd, upgraded 256k memory (the max the board can handle), horrible 32meg pci vid card (try playing counterstrike on that), NO agp slot. came w/ no burner. oh, and came preloaded with ME. think i got reamed on that deal, though it was free to me so I can't complain too much.

I have a 4 year old EMachine that i still use to this day....

its a 466 originally came with 64mb ram which i upgraded to 256 and it had onboard graphics so i put in a pci geforce 2 card and i havent really had a problem gaming untill now.

I played Everquest which is an online game and is a monster to run. It was slow at times but really had no problem.

Not too many complaints with the comp over all, can't really complain cause it was a xmas gift and didnt cost me a dime cept what i paid to upgrade mem and the vid card.

I am loooking for a new machine, but i probably wont go emachines again. mainly because of the un-upgradeablility (is that a word?).

I used to work with them about 4 to 5 years ago when I repaired computers. We thought that they were the crapiest machines ever. I thought they had gone away but I guess they resurfaced.

i personally had a horrible experience with emachines... they dont even do their own damn customer service... they have some old ladys from who knows where answering the phone....

I'm not sure what you mean about this. I've upgraded all of the 333s in my office to 256mb ram and they run much better now under Win2K. I don't know about too much memory being a bad thing, but it certainly can get to the point of overkill...where it does no further good.

I had an emachine a couple years ago. It was my first real brought computer, my first one was a gift. It was good for what I did then which was basicly search the web, but as I got into other things, mainly programming and gamming, it was extremely slow. So I just brought a new computer. The sad thing is it cost over 3000 dollars but you can probably get one for 800 dollars now.

Well there are 4 Emachines that we have at the office - one I have to rebuild every six months and 3 have worked flawlessly for 2 years now..... I have noticed compatability problems with some software/hardware but for the price the darn things can't be beat.

Bought one for Dad. Average user at the most and he loves it. Cable access so he can dowload porn with the best of us. 1.8 Ghz, 40G hd, 128 Ram, xp home, $299.00. What a fucking deal!

Wait it gets better!

I got it on special from CompUsa and got a wireless router, wireless card for my laptop, Norton Internet Security, PC Relocator, little Epson printer, and a box of 20 CD-RW's. $400 value - FREE (had to send in all the rebates but still)!

Really though, it all depends on the user.

I bought 2 of them in the past....both served their purpose I ditched the case and built a car Mp3 player out of one, then networked the second (in the garage...read doghouse) with a newer P4 dvd sportin computer in the house for email and net surfing. Never the less both have worked flawlessly.....if basic functional and cheap are what your'e after e machines fit the bill.

I will say though there are many beige box builders with newer better features on their "Value PC" lines but you can't roll them back into Wal-mart :]

My boss got one, and I just suggested he make sure it had an agp port. He bought the computer, an extra 256mb of ram(to make 512 total), and a gf4 ti4200. It runs BF1942 flawlessly at high resolutions, and that game is one hell of a resource hog. Ended up being pretty cheap.

Anyway, on the subject of building your own - it is usually cheaper only if you already have a copy of windows. Otherwise you have to tack on an extra $90 for home XP, $150 for pro, or stick with linux (last I looked at OEM prices). I had a hacked XP for a while, but I got sick of hearing about all of the holes and not being able to patch them. Just a reminder not to forget the price of an OS when talking about building your own.

I finally just bought a PC after years of building them. I was able to get exactly the parts I wanted from ABS for a couple hundred less than I could assemble it at newegg. At that point I said screw it, and decided to let them deal with making it run smooth and replace any failed hardware. I couldn't be happier with the results.
