WMP Question

Happy weekend TPFers.

I'm considering doing a regular hard drive reformat + Windows reinstallation today, but what's holding me back is my music collection. Right now, it is organized just the way I want it and I'm afraid that after reformatting, I will have to re-organize my collection, which would take a near eternity. Is there any way I can save my library and restore it after reformatting my hard drive?

Thanks.

I'm not sure......but....

Under "My Documents" > "My Music", you will find a folder called "My Playlists".

If you set your music up the same exact way (old path = new path), I would think these playlist files (in the "My Playlist" folder) should work again.

Basically, the playlist works off of paths for the music files. I would just make notes about how your music files are stored and try to duplicate it.

you could create a partition on your current harddrive, copy all your music across to the new partition, reformat the original partition and do a fresh build of your OS and then copy music back and delete the second partition.

soma, the best I've found in a quick search through google and microsoft.com is this: Export Information from Your Library

This is aimed at Media Player 10, but it looks like it may work with Media Player 9. I'm not sure on how to import the data back in after an install. This will only save the library data, and not the actual music files on your HD. To save the files, you'll probably need another HD of some type.
