AVI Problem

Hello all!

I'm having problems with avi's. Whenever I try to play them WMP thinks its song. For example, I tried to play an episode of 24, which should be about 45mins, but when i open it it tries to play a song which is 25 hours long. I've installed all the codecs I can find: Divx 3.11, Divx 5, Xvid, MPEG4... but still no luck.

Any advice?

Thanks

Try installing the Ace Mega Codec software and see if perhaps you might not have had the right codec to play it. I had the same problem trying to watch the first episode of 24 season 4 but it cleared up after I installed this.

download g-spot. it's a program that will tell you what codec the file is trying to use and whether you have it. if you don't, it's pretty easy to go find it.

Tried both now. Installed every single component of the mega pack, and still the same problem. When I use g-spot, almost every field shows up as n/a, except for type, audio src and path. Thats all. Sucks. Any other ideas?

use control panel, add/remove programs...get rid of any codecs you see there.

I don't mess with all them codec packs as you no idea what all is really in it.

http://download.divx.com/divx/DivX521XP2K.exe

official divx playback codec for win

try that see if you still got problems.

Have you tried right click on the file then use "open with" option? Use something other than WMplayer, perhaps WinDVD? and see if it plays?

Are you completely positive that the file is supposed to have video in it. If you downloaded it, it might be corrupt or a fake. Had this happen millions of times. Just noticed that you used plural in your post, so is this happening to all your avis or just one or few. Judging from GSpot info I'm pretty sure that the file is fake, though.

If it does come out to be not corrupt or fake, then I suggest installing K-Lite Codec Pack 2.40 FULL. It covers most of the codecs that you would need to watch movies. Also I recommend VLC, which plays most movies without installing additional codecs.

Thanks for all your help, but it still doesn't work. I've deleted them and won't be downloading them again I guess. Thanks anyway!

What did you use to download them, anyway??

Arrh,
Here is a problem I have had. When you use you use Gspot, does it tell you that you have two compatible codecs installed? I have found when that is case for me I have problems and I have to resort to using VLC which I cannot recommend enough. Definitely pick that up.

Unfortunately there are like a million codec bundles out there. If you do a google search you will find one. Keep trying, the other thing you can do is install bsplayer, see if that helps?
