Napster protected mp3's?

My fathers got a ipod and a napster supscription for xmas, and today he gets around to setting it up - only to find that napster files arnt compatible with ipods it seems, due to the protected WMA format, this then makes the napster subsription useless due to him only wanting to hear the songs on his ipod. Is there any free way of converting them to plain old mp3's or at least something that ipod can support. I know napster have a napster to go that converts it, but you have to pay considerably more a month, and he isnt even sure he wants to go with napster long term yet

a remember hymn-project.org did it for itunes, so im hoping there might possibly something on the same vein for napster?

any suggestions?

it's possible

Heh, the DRM for napster actually just been cracked recently, funny you should ask - heh.
There's article about this on
URL=http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/02/17/0346229&tid=141&tid=95]slashdot[/URL].

The actual directions for this are here - http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000910031543/[

This is all presuming though that your father knows how to use winamp [or is willing to learn] and as well as sticking it to the Man

enjoy,

PS - congrats on your 200th post.

remember kids, this is for fair use only, so please don't go about giving these things away to just anybody :-P

ok anyway yeah, this is just like the analog loop I would have suggested except somewhat better.
may I suggest however to prevent quality loss (more then their already has been)to encode in something loseless, for the ipod I suggest apple loseless for everything else flac.

I had the same problem also, but this was before DRM could be hacked. What I did was, burned the songs using Napster's built in cd ripper, called Roxio, then I would rip the tracks onto my computer, and finally convert them over to mp3, since mp3's can be played by any type of player.

The downside is that you probably, have to waste a cd, though.

I believe circumventing DRM is illegal though, thanks to the DMCA. Stick it to the man anyway .
