user:pass@www.whatever.com

I can't seem to access sites using the user : pass@www.whatever.com format.

I remember reading somewhere (I think it was here) that the new service packs disabled it, but there was something that you could download/edit/delete/whatever to enable that function.

If someone could tell me how to do it, I would really appreciate it! I searched, but couldn't find the right words to find it. Ah well...

Anyway... Thanks for your time, and have a good 'un!

EDIT: Sorry, I forgot to say that browser I use. Harshaw knew/guessed right. It is IE (Internet Explorer)

I don't know about any patches out there. I have this problem with IE, but not with Firefox. You may want to use a different browser.

I have the same problem, but it can be "solved" by removing the user : pass@ part from the addy, then typing that by hand into the pop-up screen demanding a username/password.

I would of course like to offer you a solution, but don't have one yet. The Opera browser I normally use has no problems with the user : pass thing, but then doesn't quite work with a lot of the websites that use such addys, which forces me to use IE anyway.

That link points to a solution for the IE problem you're having, Nachtschleicher. Not too complicated, just follow the directions toward the bottom, they're pretty simple.

you shouldn't use that format anyway since many sites will reject that link format anyway and force you to use the login box. Most of the time that happens to me.

You could try this:

1) Open notepad, textpad, or the editor of your choice
2) copy and paste the following:

WINDOWS 2K, XP, ME
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_HTTP_USERNAME_PASSWORD_DISABLE]
"iexplore.exe"=dword:00000000
"explorer.exe"=dword:00000000
WINDOWS 9x, NT4
Code:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_HTTP_USERNAME_PASSWORD_DISABLE]
"iexplore.exe"=dword:00000000
"explorer.exe"=dword:00000000
3) Save the file to your desktop or other location that is easy for you to access. Save it as "fix-ie.reg" (Note: If you're using Notepad, be sure to select "All Files" from the "Save as type" field. Otherwise, it will save it as "fix-ie.reg.txt", which is of no use)

4) Double click the file on your desktop, or where ever you saved it to

5) Click yes to the confirmation message. Then click OK to the notification message.

6) Close your browsers and start them back up. If you have certain spyware apps installed on your machines that keep IE open even when it's not showing up on the desktop, you may need to reboot entirely.
