My next computer will be an Apple.
 

Yes, I admit it. Not that I have a problem with PC's, I've had many of them over the years and loved every single one. But I'm sick of walking into Big Byte (big computer chain over here) and drooling over the latest G5/OSX.
Maybe its cuz I'm a sucker for pretty shiny things, maybe its cuz my background is in video editing/animation...or perhpahs the fact I saw Pirates of Silican valley the other night and decided Jobs is a manical f$#khead that deserves my money. For whatever reason, when I get some new employment...I'll be investing some G5/large LCD loving.

Anyone else have a Apple craving?

I really want the Powerbook laptop. Great looking and love the interface. I'm lucky that if I do plan on getting it, I can get an Educational discount from my university. So it really isn't that bad of a deal.

Yeah one of the great things about Apples is the edu discount, very helpful given they're not the cheapest of computers :)

I'll prolly buy an Ipod in the near future...so Apople should look forward to a decent part of my paycheck.

I thonk NZ is getting an Apple retail store soon, so I'll have to seek that out.

YES i want a apple so bad......... my school built a new building and every classroom in it has power MAC G5's. I never looked at an apple before but now i am starting to like them.

i don't have a lap top but i plan to get one maybe it will be a power book

Any student should be able to get I think...just need to go thru the rigth channels. I need to win the lottery, so I can get me a cluster of liquid cooled G5's

i am posting this from my powerbook g4...i love it...will never use anything else again...sleek looks, seemless integration of software and hardware, and security of unix...can't beat it...

those G5's are monsters really they are...I really want to compile gentoo on one..
go for it....but remember it does lessen your freedoms with parts.

I only like apple's notebooks and MP3's, I also have a 4G 20GB iPod and I use it all the time.

Alas the design constraints are part of the reason apples are so grunty/stable.

Collectively my wife and I have owned eight Macs over the years. I've generally used PCs at work, and there were times when Apple was on the downhill slide that I was tempted to go Windows. But for me it's always come down to two things: it's always been a superior platform for graphics and multimedia work and, since I've never been anything like a real guru, there's never been any software or device problems that I couldn't fix relatively easily.

Money's tight, so we're sticking with our current machines -- quicksilver G4, a five-year-old iMac, and ethernet -- but when the time comes, it's gonna be 17-inch Powerbooks and wireless networking all around, baby, including the printer and DSL.

any person who does not drool at a G5 needs to get their thoughts checked :\

I prefer PCs mainly because I game so much.

Wouldn't mind a dual processor G5 though :P

I've been recommending Apples to my non-technical friends (who don't play games, of course). I'm just sick of dealing with people's spyware/virus problems, fixing them, only to have to do the same thing a couple months later.

Dealing with all the security BS that comes with the PC platform is just not worth it--it makes more sense for people that just need to get work done to have a computer that just works, without having to worry about any stray clicks that'll land the machine with a pile of crappy code.

Id love an apple, if only for OSX. OSX totally pwns, but I can justify spending the money on another machine that I cant upgrade just for an OS.

I bought an iBook recently, and while I can honestly say I love the OSX (especially the Unix underlay), the design, the layout and the seamless action of the software, what really pisses me off is that if I want to put any new software on there, or buy a new cable, or a mouse, whatever, I have little option except to fork out VAST sums of money. I am now wondering whether I was seduced by pretty casings etc

I've been using Apples since I learned to program using an Apple ][+. I'm posting this from the iMac G5 I just set up. I have to run a network of Windows machines at work, I'm very happy to be able to return to this when I come home.

I liek the Apple's for their design and all..but sometimes they do a little too much...on my gf's notebook i noticed the light was making a breathing kind of illumination...to imitate sleep...and i was wondering why they did that...
I don't like anything thats TOO user friendly. Granted i own a PC and I get my share of problems and all, but I can play a ton of games that the mac isn't compatible with. So I'm staying with Bill Gates right now, even if I hate his guts.
No offense to all you "Macks" though. :D

As soon as someone writes decent engineering tools for the mac, I'll switch. We got a G5 at work and opened it up. It's a sexy piece of work for sure, very sexy.

I love my iBook G4. Apple seem to have made huge strides in design over the last five or six years, and without a doubt the machines (generally) have that *wow* factor. I agree that the prices are that bit higher but I really don't mind paying a little extra for such a sexy machine and OS.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't call myself a Mac zealot, I've got a reasonably decent PC upstairs that I bought just about a year ago and it's great but I use it mostly for playing game and some emulation stuff that I can't do on my Mac. Plus, you know, it's not as simple to laze on the sofa with a hulking great desktop PC as it is with my iBook.

I just took a bite, and I'm loving it. There are still some things I find are alot easier on a PC, but in general, I'm starting to understand why they say Macs are more user friendly. It's a completely different experience. Now I'm running a prog called Aqua Dock on my pc, cuz I can't live without a magnifying dock on my screen

pottsynz: Just god bless you! I can't imagine computing on anything other than Apple. It was the best move I've ever made. I am anxiously awaiting the release of v10.4 Tiger. Soon as that baby is available, I'm preordering it.

How much does it cost to upgrade each version of OS X? Like from version 10.1 to 10.4? Do the newer versions just offer more software or is it some sort of security update? Just curious here.

The upgrades are standalone; each '.x' has been $129. You can jump from 10.1 to 10.4 (when available) without hitting the intervening versions.

Each upgrade has brought cool new features as well as increasing the speed of the operating system.

Come on, buy your first mac. You know you want to. You will love osX and the hardware. No more ctrl alt delete. No more pop-ups from the lower right of the screen. No one cares enough to attack you. Microsoft office for OSX works just fine. Networking is easy. Wireless is easy. iTunes and iPhoto are easy. Safari is a really good browser (tabbed browsing is the best--don't know if IE does this). The dock is better than the windows start menu.

they all come with garageband, now, too. it's a blast......building songs is like working with legos. really fun if you have a guitar to plug in.......

Loved the promise that BeOS offered. I remember first receiving Dev Release 2 in an issue of MacWorld. I installed that sucker on a ZIP Disk and booted my Performa 6400/180 off of it. It ran faster than Mac OS 8 running on the internal HD. OMG. It was beautiful.

I was then crushed when they stopped supporting Mac hardware once the G3 came out.

A couple of years ago, I picked up a PowerMac 9500 180MP on the cheap specifically with the purpose of playing with BeOS. I remember excitingly loading it up as I thought back to what I experienced in DR2. Once I was there, I played around a little bit, but quickly realized I didn't care any more. OSX had long since come and fulfilled BeOS's promise andI was fine without it.

But I do think that had Be been able to stay afloat and continue developing BeOS, the computer world would be a much more interesting place today.

I was from that same era.. they lost me when I was 14 and my parents weren't about to buy me a Mac after spending so much on the ][+
