Hi. I need these 2 people I'm talking to to send me a HUGE PSD file. It'll be somewhere between 20MB-80MB give or take a few 10MB's. Are there any file hosts that'll do that size for free? Or maybe someone out there has a server that'll do a fellow TFP'er a big favor and host the file for me to download? It'll be much appreciated.

The best remote file-sharing tool out there. (my opinion). Or setup an FTP server. Don't worry about hosting.

And, a 80M PSD file?!?!?!?!?!

Try Simple Server. I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard that it's very easy to use and works well.

it's really not that large when you think about it...

layers, 16 bit depth, the average size of whatever file, the print dimensions...heck, in a basic photoshop class, they teach that most of the work you wish to print will probably be over 100MB easily just to keep resolution and quality up. not to artificially inflate the file size, but to get the absolute best quality when you need it.

Heck, i have a couple of photos that are in the 150-200MB file range after edits just due to layers and such. It's not hard to do at all if you are after best quality

Maybe you could do it with a Gmail account.
They give you a 1000Mb limit, so that wouldnt be a problem and I dont think they have a max file size for transferring.
Give the others access to the account and they could send it to the same address, you could then log on and download it.

PSD files can be overly large, hence they are seemingly less portable. An easy solution is to use file compression. I suggest WinRAR... ...this will allow you to compress the file to a % of its original size with out losing any quality. If, in fact, you experince a problem with less than adequate results, you can always split the file into several different volumes. These volumes can be a meg or two, this would allow you to transfer the file in packets, making it easier.

Remember, Gmail has an attachment limit around 8-10MB, so you'd need to compress/split them in order for that to work.

Hosting the file kind of a moot point, since you said that you only need to download it from them, not distribute the file.

I would highly recommend going with WINRar and splitting it up into say 5mb rar files, all of which is simply done with the simple settings and features within winrar itself. as for decompressing it is also easy as pie, just double click one of the files and winrar opens up decompresses and rejoins the file all back into one folder for easy access

wouldn't burning it onto a CD and just giving it to the person work as well, or is there some distance issues involved we are not aware of?

You should see the sizes of TIFF files that NASA takes from Hubble sometimes. I've seen 400mb images before. Yikes.

If you have a gmail account this piece of software will help:

It allows you to use your account like an additional HD. If the person you are transfering it to installs it as well it should work fine.

you can get a few gigs of server space pretty cheap anymore. just find a cheap web hosting company with at least a few hundred Mb then have them zip it and ftp it up. good to go.

100 Mb really isnt all that big anymore.

Yahoo e-mail gives you 100MB. Email it there, and then download it from there.

Email is probably the easiest along with WinRAR. Separate the file into parts and then send it.

Or, setup an ftp server.

Actually - yes they do - 5Mb mail size.

AIM direct connect will do that with no problem. I've pushed about 100mb out of that before it pukes.
If that don't work, try tinyapps.org.
The little Simple socket file transfer they've got on there is, well, just what is says.
You could download the bittorent client Azureus and seed the torrent for you buddy to dl.
Download a free ftp proggy. I'd really try the AIM direct connect first, it's "gee whiz" simple. I mean, it's an AOL product. Annoying, simple, but if you watch the install and say "no" a lot, useful as a free, fast, easy FTP.

All else fails, burn and mail a CD.

Redjake and Bltzkrieg have sent 60 GB through AIM Direct Connect before. Files restore at the part that they dropped off if the transfer is disconnected somehow. I'd use AIM!

As pervisouly said...any IM client will do you fine. Can't say I've tried dropload yet.

Any p2p client will be sweet...files is what they're built for! I recomend a dc++ based client.

www.zeropaid.com has lots of p2p stuff.
