switching from AGP to PCI Videocard

Ok, here's the deal: it seems that the AGP port on my motherboard (intel D845BG) died; it was an intermittent problem where the video signal would go out occasionally and then i moved the computer across the room and couldn't get a video signal at all. Switching to a new AGP card did nothing so I tried installing a PCI card (PNY G-Force FX 5500) -- this got me a video signal and everything else on the board seems fine but now i can't get the drivers for the card to install properly. I downloaded the latest drivers from the nvidia site and i changed the BIOS video setting to PCI but after i install the drivers and reboot i get an erorr saying that there was an error installing the hardware drivers. I'm at a loss as to what my next step should be so any advice would be much appreciated.

Damn, sounds like a big pain in the ass. Ok, so the AGP video card has been removed, a PCI video card has been installed, and the BIOS has been changed to use the PCI video card as the primary display adapter. Cool. What exactly is the driver error you mentioned? I would check the Device Manager to see how the new PCI video card is listed, and check the properties of its listing to see what error code is given. Surely you can get this fixed.

ok, the error i get after the drivers attempt to install on reboot is : "completing the found new hardware wizard, Video Controller (VGA Compatible) An error occurred during the installation of the device. The data is invalid."

In the Device Manager the card is listed a "other devices" -- "video controller (VGA Compatible)" (with the requisite exclamation point to indicate that this shit isn't working). If you double click on the device it is listed a "this device is not configured correctly. (code 1). To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver." it's not loading the drivers for the device at all so it's listed as having no drivers.

Thanks for the detailed info. So yeah, no driver love. I would choose the reinstall driver option, and manually specify the location of the drivers as whatever directory the nVidia installer extracted them to. If the reinstall driver wizard doesn't pickup on it, that's weird. At that point, I'd try to just remove the PCI video card from the device manager, restart, and let the add new hardware wizard try again. Keep us posted.

yeah i've manually pointed it to the drivers many many times -- it installs the driver and then gives the error after reboot.
I just uninstalled the device, the hardware wizard finds it, tries installing the drivers and then give me the same error :P it's maddening. (especially since i'm trying to resist installing sims2 on my work laptop ).
