Banned websites

Is there any feature in Firefox or IE that you can set so a certain website will not load and just show up as a blank page?
My roommates friend's visit "scatlovers.com" and download videos, sometimes on my computer. Any way other than passwording it so certain websites won't load.

put the URL into your HOSTS file. This way no matter what browser you use, the site will not load. Then back it up so that you can replace it if someone ever deletes it.

My suggestion is that you lock down your PC though.

Or you can shoot your roomie.

If you have a firewall, you can probably set it to not allow traffic from that domain.

You can set your computer to lock itself after X minutes. Turn on a screensaver and check the little "ask for password" box. I do it for mine--after seven minutes of inactivity, you have to enter a password to unlock the computer. Keeps people from using it when Im not around.

i believe that if you get the "adblock" extension for FF, you can block sites.... adblock rocks!

parental controls in IE....

Yeah, lock your computer. Enable the PW function and whenever you are away from your computer, press windowsbutton+L and your computer is locked. Very simple and useful habit to pick up.

i lock my computer whenever im not at it... it automatically locks after 10 minutes of inactivity... and I hit window key + L whenever i get up...

soccerchamp76 10-03-2004 07:39 PM

Aight, I got the WindowsKey + L habit down.
Thanks all

Here's something cool to do:

Create a file in note pad. Type in:

rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation

That is the command to lock windows.
Save the file with a name of your choosing, having the extension .cmd

Now, look at that file in windows explorer.
Select it (highlight it)
Drag it to the area next to the start button.
Click that icon to lock windows.

It sounds as though you should also set your system to require that the user press CTRL+ALT+DEL before entering a password, too. If your roomie is such a dick, he may try to put in a password capture program.

add the site to your hosts file, phukraut said.

and if you want to allow people to use your computer, I suggest you enable the guest account, and lock your ID whenever you are away from your machine. this will still let them use it, but will restrict what they can do..ie, not be able to delete/modify the hosts file so they can get that scat...eeesh.
