Terrible Torrent Trouble

As I am sure many of you do, a good portion of the time there is a Bittorrent client running in the background on my computer. Recently however, I have been having trouble with corrupted downloads, which present some unique symptoms.

I started out using the generic Bittorrent client straight off the main site. I would load up a torrent, it would check the file fragments I had, and then begin downloading. After a period of time when the torrent would be nearing completion one of two things would happen. Either it would register as being complete but actually not be (one or more of the files incomplete), or the client would drop into a loop, registering complete and then taking it back and saying 99.8% complete. I was puzzled by this, and downloaded Azureus 2.1.0.4 so that I would have more information.

With Azureus the problem became even more mysterious. Torrents would load up and download seemingly without a hitch until very near the end, with only a few pieces to go. Those remaining pieces would be downloaded and then apparently fail the hash check, and discarded to be reloaded, ad infinitum. Sometimes if there were only a few blocks like this I would check in the morning to see the torrent listed as complete. Trusting Bittorrent's hash verification, I would run the .sfv and find one or more files not checking out. Reloading the torrent would result in several pieces being listed as missing and it would being to download them again.

Has anyone else had this problem? What sort of things should I check? I am running Windows XP, and just ask for any other info you think would be relevant.

That happened to me once. It didn't matter which client I used they all went into the hash fail - download loop. The way I fixed it was to delete the .torrent file and redownload it and point the client to the portion of the files that I had already downloaded.
