DVD in Windows Media Player??? - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

I must be a complete moron....

I have this old DVD-ROM thats been following me around for years, but has invariably found it's way into every PC I've had since. It's a Matshita 8583. I don't use the DVD on my computer much because I have a DVD player in the living room.

I used to be able to play DVDs on the PC without fail, however, since I've installed SP2 (it's not blaming SP2, just a time line indicator) it won't let me play DVDs in WMP.

It says I'm missing a decoder. So, I go find a decoder. Can't find a decoder for XP. Manuf. website claims that support is native to XP.

After 30 minutes of dickering around, I finally got XP to identify my drive by the correct name, but still can't get WMP to play the DVD.

I know I can download PowerDVD; WinDVD; VideoLAN and all that jazz, but I don't use the damn thing enough to warrant installing a whole new piece of software. Not to mention, since WMP says it can, I'd like it to play my DVDs.

Am I missing something?

Maybe I'll just go have a pop-tart and think this one through....

That's really odd. For me WMP never played DVDs on a fresh install until I installed the Kazaa Lite Codec pack, which I'm not even sure if it is still available.

WMP doesn't play DVDs natively. It uses the decoder from whatever other program you may have to play DVDs
