Sprint DSL
 

I have a quick question about Sprint DSL:

We have 3 computers sharing the DSL line. The DSL is shared through a Linksys router. It is not a wireless router. When one or two computers is on the internet is VERY fast, but when the 3rd PC is started up, the internet slows down dramatically. Does anyone have any idea why just turn adding another PC to the network would show it down?

Is it a specific computer that is always the third? Or does it happen with all combinations? Spyware, virii, or adware could be causing the problem also. I'd also check all of the systems for viruses and make sure there isn't any resident p2p programs running on any of them. They can be a huge bandwitdh hog.

it does seem to be the same computer slowing it down.

Just be careful when you run it since you can seriously mess up your system. Its better to log it and have someone examine what it comes up with. A lot of spyware can be very tricky and a PITA to get rid of.

If all of the machines are clear of spyware, I'd also look into a firmware upgrade for the router. I know some of the firmware revisions of their wireless routers had some issues. Never hurts to get the latest firmware, even if it is a wired router.

Running netstat -a on the 3rd PC will show you a list of all open connections. It's normal for it to be about a page and a half or more. Look for ESTABLISHED connections to machines other than localhost and that should clue you in on if something is on your PC phoning home..

So it looks like the 3rd PC has "DSO Expoit" on it. Spybot says it clears it, but next time i scan, its back. Does anyone know how to get read of thing thing?

Also, when i scan the PC when it is in Safemode it does not find the DSO expoit, but it does when the PC is in normal mode.

XP, right? How many user accounts do you have on your machine? If you have more than one, it's a lengthy process. First, promote all users to system administrators (so you can get at their accounts in safe mode), make sure your Ad-Aware and SpyBot are up to date with the latest definitions, reboot into safe mode, log into each account and run Ad-Aware and Spybot, clear Temporary Internet Files, and delete all items in \Documents and Settings\[currentloggedinuser]\Local Settings\Temp. Log out, log into next account and repeat.

Other than that, I guess we could always fall back on the "Reformat" option...

one account. And ive run ad-aware and spybot both. They come up with nothing. For an update when ever we pull and 1 PC (there are 3) off the network speeds increase. So it may not be just the one.

So if PC's 1 and 2 are on and running fine, PC 3 comes up and everything slows way down, when you power down PC 1 or 2, the speeds pick right back up?

If so, I'd really check your firmware on your router or see if a friend will let you borrow their router to rule that out. Norton AV and Windows Update (when automatic updates are enabled to the "Download then let me know when to install" option is enabled) like to start gobbling up bandwidth when the PC is first booted. Maybe turn them all on before you go to bed and see if it's still slow in the morning?
