Odd GMail e-mails

I've got a fairly new gmail account that I've only used to send an email to my brother. It's not been used for anything else. No e-mails sent, or received other than those to my brother.

But when I logged in I had 2 e-mails, that I don't understand where they'd come from.

The first one....

Thank you for your e-mail.

I will be out of the Gallery until August 31st and may not be able to reply

to your email until then. For anything urgent please call ___ Gallery at

___-___-1121 or email Simone ___ at simone@___gallery.com.

Best,

Brian ____

I edited out the personal information. But I googled the name of the place and the phone number and they're both legit. It's some art gallery in New York. I've never heard of them though.

What strikes me as odd is that my email address is pretty unique. It's my last name @gmail.com, but there's only a dozen or so with the same last name.

I can't comprehend how I could receive this email.

And than there was this one...which looks to just be some spam, but I don't know.

An e-mail that you sent contained a Virus
You DO NOT need to contact the Selfridges
Helpdesk to report this incident as the Anti Virus
Software has already cleaned it.

The infected component in the scanned document was deleted.

Violation Information:
The attachment private_01.doc.pif contained the virus W32.Netsky.P@mm and
was deleted.
I hadn't sent any emails for about a week before I got this.

Maybe this type of random shit is common, but I've never received anything like these in my non gmail accounts.

Any explantation to either one?

The second looks like someone else (with Netsky) sent a virused email to someone at selfridges.co.uk. The virus set your gmail address up as the "from" address (even though you never sent it).

The virus was detected and returned to you (even though you never sent it).

Actually.. looking at the second one.. the same thing could have happened.. except the receiver's mail server didn't detect the virus and sent it to the person. The person had an "auto-reply" set up to handle all mail while they're on vacation (or whatever).. and it's an auto-response to the virus email that forged your name in the "From" part.

My guess..

There are ways (evidently) to query Google just right and get a real nice list of valid Gmail addresses.

That's not even necessary in this case, you just need to be in some infected person's addressbook somewhere.

Well, if it isn't virus/worm related, do please remember GMail is still in beta. Some problems are bound to crop up, though I have only seen two, submitted bug reports to them and they were fixed about 48hrs later.
