about routers and proxies

Hey my computer is on my network with a router, and it seems to hate any proxie i give it if i have it inside the network. However if I connect it directly to the net it loves the proxies, so my question is do routers make it so you can't run a proxie?

How exactly does the computer "hate the proxy" ?

If I understand correctly, if your computer is attached directly to your cable/DSL/POTS modem, you can connect to a proxy with no issues. However, if you're behind a router and have a private IP (ie: 192.168.something), you can't connect to the proxy, or webpages don't load?

Do webpages load normally - without trying the proxy - when you're behind the router (ie: are you sure that you're able to access the internet normally)?

Also, do you run the proxy or is it some internet proxy that you're using?
