Help upgrading iMac internal memory?

My wife has a 17" flat panel 1GHZ iMac with 256k ram. (2 sticks of 128)

One stick is in the "user accessible" area, and one is internal. She'd like to upgrade to two sticks of 512k. Does anyone know if the DIMM is sautered in or if I can actually replace it myself? Is it a different stick than would fit in the user accessible slot? I know my way around the inside of a PC, but I've never opened a Mac before. I'm looking for some tips to see how feasible it is.

Thanx in advance...

Location: ask your mom
prying open the internal ram compartment voids your warranty.
