SM Deluxe has a strange problem.
 

I think I really screwed up my other comp, with what I believe now, a not complete, or very messed up version of XP.
So, I need to format it and put Win 2k back on. Is it even possible to go back to 2k since I changed my drive from FAT32 to NTSF? If so how exactly do I do this? I have heard that you can't from some sites.

This is what happened, I got a Virus (pretty bad one), so I formatted my HD and installed XP, instead of upgrading (was told to do this from a friend of mine that gave me a copy of his Win XP), now two things are wrong;

One) ITS HORRIBLY slow, it takes about 15 mins. for XP to come up, I have 768 Megs of ram, and 1.3 GHz Processor. Basically the same as the comp I am using now, except it's 1 GHz. And this comp boots up faster.

Two) I get this warning, every time I try to use the internet. It gives me this warning and resets the computer. I can let the computer sit all day, but once I try and use the internet, it does this.

I’m guessing there’s something wrong with the copy he gave me, because I have never had this problem with XP on this Comp. Sorry if im not clear enough on some stuff, if you need more of an explination, just say so.

Not sure about the formatting issues, but I assume that there's a way to get an HDD back to FAT32.

I know with 100% certainty that this is a virus. My RA and girlfriend both got this virus. It's a popular one, but its name escapes me right now! It's pretty hard to remove. I think we ended up formatting my RA's computer to get rid of it. :) My girlfriend was able to get rid of the virus on her PC, though. She said that everytime you opened up IE the PC would try to turn off like that. There's a command to stop the PC from shutting down, but I can't think of that either. :(

I'd just format the bitch again. Everyone knows the solution to all Windows problems is FCKGW!

The virus you have is the Sasser virus.
lsass.exe is a big clue and the shutdown timer.

Microsoft.com has some patches for it but I am 100% positive that it is the Sasser virus...goddamn German teenager.

Thank you, I had no clue it was a virus, thanks alot, ill have to see if i can find a way to rid my computer of it. I dont want to hastle with formating it.

yes it is the sasser worm. The same thing happend to me when I reformatted a friends computer.

To get the worm of right after reformat and reinstall, I downloaded SP1 immediately, and when this warning did come up I went into the command prompt and typed in something to stop automatic shutdown, unfortunetly I totally forgot the command.

Once SP1 was installed I downloaded the removal tool from Norton, which can be found on the following page.

Then I installed the other updates from microsoft.

Hope this helps, if I find out the command to stop automatic shutdown, I will reply again to this thread.

Well, I done did something again, this time I have no screenshot, but it’s kind of explainable. This is about the computer I use now (not my secondary from before, that one is virus free now, thanks guys :) ), just a little while ago, I noticed that Notepad program got deleted somehow. I figured it was a virus and did a scan and found one.. err multiple, I also used Ad-Aware and found tons of stuff, anyways, notepad is gone. Now recently I went to open up a video like normal, just did it yesterday, and now Media player is gone! Are there viruses out there that can delete stuff?! Also is there anyway to get back these programs witch I use so much? I also have all the service packs installed too. I'm just lost.

Well, you can download Media Player for free from Microsoft. Notepad should be on your Windows CD, or you may be able to download that, as well.

There are viruses out there that can do nearly anything to your system, so I wouldn't rule out a virus being the cause... but are you certain the programs are deleted? Did the shortcuts just get moved and/or deleted themselves? Just an idea.

The notepad missing is a virus. :) I have it right now but am too lazy to get an antivirus program or even redownload notepad.exe from Microsoft.

I found out that it didn't "delete" notpad, but instead changed the target it was looking for. Heres what it changed it to.

Actmovie what ever that was, im guessing the virus. So all i did was change the target back to notpad.exe and all is well again. The same didnt nessarly work for Media player tho. i had to download that. Just thought i share this lil fact, since others have this going on too.

start, run, cmd, shutdown -a :)
