What's it worth?
I came across this computer, and I would like to buy it, but I'm not sure what I should pay for it......
It has 512MB RAM 220 Gig HD Cd Burner + CD ROM drive Windows XP AMD Athlon XP 2400 (2.4 Ghz I believe) 256 MB video card, New wireless keyboard and mouse, and a few other goodies. what's a system like that worth? P.S. it has a clear acrylic tower, about 5 fans on the tower, and 1 for the CPU... I can't attach a pic or I would. Any replies appreciated. |

no 2400 is AMD's way of fooling ppl into thinking it does run @2.4Ghz when it actually runs at 2 or 2.1. Coudn't tell you how much it's all worth tho. |
Not fooling, just a rating to make it lok comparable to Intel's chips because most people think MHz are all that dictates how good a processor is.
Other than that, sorry I can't help. |
I want to say the 2400 runs at about 2Ghz stock. If you can name the video card and ram I can give a better estimate, but I would pay something like 800-1000 for that rig with the current information.
|
You could build a system like that for about $1,000.
I would expect it would cost $1,300 - $1,500 if sold by a big company. |
The most expensive parts on that will be the video card (not many 256MB ones that are in a low price range at all), the harddrive (200+gig is still costly), and XP (90$+)
More details as what type of ram, what video specifically, what are the other "goodies".. hard to say a price w/out knowing its insides. |
Yeah, there's not nearly enough info to give a reasonable estimate. If ya could give more info it would be easier. A 256 MB video card can be a shitty FX 5200 or a nice 5950 Ultra. There's a HUGE price difference between those.
Same thing with RAM and hard drive. We simply need more specific info to price it out. If ya can get more info, I'll be happy to help! -Lasereth |

OK, I'm not sure about the video card, but the HDs (it has multiple) are maxtor 7200 RPM drives, one at 100gig and the other is 120 gig. It has windows XP PRO, Microsoft office XP, and I believe you're right at saying 2.0 or 2.1 Ghz on the processor. The Video card and RAM are both PNY if that helps. I don't have many more specifics than that. Thanks for the replies. :) |
without exact specifications, it's harder to determine a really precise value for the machine.
you could try to go on newegg and price out the different components/software... that might be a good way for you to see firsthand what you'll be paying for (assuming you're buying). other than that, like Lasereth said, there can be a HUGE price difference in a lot of the components. i think any price someone quotes here will be based upon a guess, or "what would you pay for this (without seeing the actual machine)" thing. kinda like someone trying to sell you a car and all they tell you is: it's got four-wheels, red, and goes really fast. ( is it a ford or a ferrari? - HUGE price difference. ) that said, i'd probably say i'd shell out $700-1,000 and then haggle with the seller. |
I sell a system similar to that where I work, and we're asking about $1,800 for it. If that helps.
|
ok thanks, I appreciate the responses.... I understand about needing specifics, so I'll try to get them as soon as I can. The PC is only about 1 month old as well, not that it really matters, but I'll get back with more info as soon as I can.
Thanks again. |
It's simply impossible to price a computer out without knowing more information. :( Keep in mind that the software that the computer comes with will jack up the price BIG time, especially Office XP. The videocard and motherboard are two other big factors, neither of which we know. Does it have a sound card? AMD CPU-Fan, or third-party CPU Fan? Floppy? What kind of Power Supply? What kind of fans? Cables?
There's just way too many variables to make a worthy price check. Sorry! If you can find out any more info, we could nail it easily, but until then it's up in the air. -Lasereth |

Lots of stuff! I'll find out as soon as I can. |
Ok I posted pics over in the photography board, you can see them
Here |
Just a general rule of thumb, if you shop around and build it yourself, the price will almost always be cheaper!
Nice case and pics BTW! |
hmmm... i dont know how prices are over there, but i would probably give about 6-7000 NOK for that system, not knowing the specifics though :)
|
Ok I found out the RAM is PNY technologies, and it's PC2700, and on top of that, the video card is an NVIDEA G Force 256 MB card.
Slowly but surely, I'm getting the details :D |

*EDIT* We also need to know if it's an Ultra or not. There's a big difference between a GeForce FX 5900 Ultra and a GeForce FX 5900. Sorry to be so particular, but we're talking about hundreds of dollars differences here! -Lasereth |
come with a monitor? another factor ...

you need to find out what type of video card it has
you can get a 5200 with 256 megs of ram for like $80, and you get an $80 card (not much power.) or you cna get a 5950 for about $400 and get a nice card |
