Up to date computer building tutorial?

Hate to sound like a newbie, I've built two computers and heavily updated like five, but it's been a while since I did one from scratch.

Does anyone have a good link or favorite site for a recently update tutorial for building a computer? Its an ATX case, Athlon if it makes any difference. I'm pretty sure I can do it without, but I'd like to have a checklist of some sort, thanks

I have never really seen tutorials on it. but any walkthrough should use specific equiptment, just for less problems.

Main thing to look for it a good mobo, and most everything is built around that. The mobo will tell ya what proc to use, what ram to buy, and what (size) case to get.

dont go cheep on the mobo.

here's a basic parts list:
  • mobo
  • proc
  • cooling (heat sink/fans/etc..)
  • case
  • ram
  • PSU (usually one comes w/ case)
  • floppy?
  • cdrom
  • hard disk
  • video card
  • sound card
  • nic? or modem?

Think thats all of the basics...

look into the mobo manual to see if you need to set anything. You shouldt have to....since everything is configured through the bios now.

mount hardware
plug in cpu
apply grease to heatsink
mount heatsink
plug hsf into power header
plug in ram
plug in ide/sata/scsi
plug in pci cards
plug in cdrom audio cable to soundcard
plug in case fans and devices (to power)
plug in any special headers you are using (usb, firewire, etc)
plug in the atx header
boot

What I also do with all my builds is to install the minimum of stuff first, like cpu, hsf, one stick of ram and a hd. If the fans come on and the bios gives a happy beep, I start installing things one at a time. It takes a little longer, but if you have a conflict, or something is bad out of the box, you know right away which piece is the culprit.

Heres a site with many good tutorials, including computer building: (check out the "how-to" box 1/2 way down the right hand margin)

BTW, AMD also has a pretty good guide on their site!

have to agree with Ratman on this one.

Build the base system first: Mobo, cpu, cpu fan, ram, and video card.. If it can get you to bios then you are good.. from there start installing everything in priority... hard drive.. sound...

it does take longer, but if anything is going to give you problems it is a lot easier to troubleshoot.

Always remember to add metal shavings to your power supply before using it the first time. Just shave some metal off into those venting slots.

(Please don't actually do that.)
